"Friedman: not convinced Treliving is Flames GM next year"

That's literally the headline on SportsNet....

I feel like this is the exact sort of thing that Friedman was talking about when he left radio for a while.

I heard the segment and the biggest "bombshell" was that the Flames are ok letting his contract expire. This rarely happens. Either the guy gets an extension or gets fired. You don't want someone running things who may not be back because they may not make the best decisions.

The fact that the Flames aren't 100% convinced that Treliving is the guy shouldn't be surprising. His moves look pretty decent on paper but his team's on ice results have left a lot to be desired. I have no problem with the Flames breaking the mold a bit on this one and waiting it out. I'm not worried in the slightest that Tre will ruin the team out of desperation or spite.

If this is the case, and the Flames senior execs and owners are convinced that they have to Oiler this organization and make it a gong show, then s Can Treliving today instead of having a lame duck going into the trade deadline and doing draft prep.

I find it funny, because I deal with the Stamps all the time who are owned by the Flames, that the Stamps management team almost seems to have installed a wall between the Flames and the Stamps and because of that we don't have this kind of drama with the Stamps and they are one of the best run sports franchises out there.

I hope this isn't true and isn't a case of either ownership meddling or executive meddling. But if Tre is let go, then prepare for another rebuild as a new GM will want to put his stamp on the organization.

Hey Flames;

Quit being stupid and wake up.

Keep Treliving. Can Gulutzan. Hire Claude Julien (hoo boy would that be a grievous error if the B's let him go). Sign Steve Mason in summer to a two year deal for basically no money because he's had a terrible year. Continue to develop the roughly eight thousand G prospects this team has until they're ready, by which time one or both of Kylington and Andersson will be playing a regular shift on the blue line, and Gaudreau and Monahan will be in their prime. Win Stanley Cup.

Running an NHL team is super easy you guys, I don't know why people seem to have so much trouble with it.

If Burke does end up leaving for the U.S. National program, Treliving could be promoted to president of hockey ops. This would mean he wouldn't be back as GM next year. His mentor Maloney would probably be GM in that case.

That is a huge mistake...not a minimal one. The coach has the most influence putting a product on the ice with the goods he is given.

I said no, but really I think he has been hit and miss. But to be successful in this business, you need to be a lot better than 50%.

Would be foolish for ownership to forgo the long game here. I don't think too many of us expected contenders at this point in the rebuild. Sure this season has been crap, but its not a constant climb from mediocrity, there is always ups and downs. If they are judging his performance solely on making the playoffs, I think its a huge mistake and counter productive if the true goal is winning the big prize.

I'd rather make a mistake by hiring a coach (without giving up assets, minimal salary compared to a player, can easily be replaced, etc.) then give up assets (star players, 1st round picks, etc.) to try and fill holes on the team.

Treliving has made the right moves elsewhere, and has largely been unlucky.

If there is a franchise that has earned the benefit of the doubt of doing it 'their own way', it's the notoriously successful Calgary Flames.

I voted yes but I also think the need for stability is overrated. If you think your current plan is not going to take you where you want to be you're better off changing course.

Obviously you don't want a completely revolving door there but if new management can make the necessary changes to direct the team forward at a better pace then stability doesn't mean a thing.

If anybody wants an opinion piece on the Flames written by an Oilers fan, here is Sportsnet's article today: http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/f...ading-toronto/

I think the words "Edmonton" and "Oilers" are mentioned more than the words "Calgary" and "Flames"

Just pure unadulterated garbage

I apologize if this has already been beaten to death in this thread. But it's quite something how these kind of Flames rumors (Hamilton on the block? Treliving not returning?) coincide with Eastern road trips, or Eastern Canadian teams traveling through Calgary.

Always kills me when Spector comes out of the woodwork to write Flames articles. His "just being a reporter, honest" routine is so easy to see through.

I just heard it again and took some notes

- doesn't think they're gonna be sellers, not how they operate as an organization
- Pinder brings up Wideman and Fried says he's been on the block for a while he thinks
- Engelland is not a core piece so selling him wouldn't make them sellers
- Nashville has woken up
- thinks Flames'll stay the course
- Heard some teams had called about Bennett on Thurs/Fri
- Tre said no not avail
- Knows somebody who knows the Flames org and they're comfortable to do things differently
- Flames say it isn't ominous that they won't sign Tre to extension yet
- But Friedman says it is hard to see it that way because 31 teams don't do that
- Doesn't know the outcome
- Even if flames make playoffs, not 100% convinced Tre will be GM next year
- Doesn't think Tre will make desperate stupid moves at deadline to save his job
- Pinder follows up and says that the pressure may force Tre to make desperate moves, Fried responds by saying that's not how he operated in Arizona
- panic trade hurts Tre's future, won't do that, hurt chances of new job if necessary
- Doesn't think Maloney is angling for job if Flames don't sign Tre
- Boomer brings up meddling ownership but makes it clear he's just repeating other peoples' rumours and that he doesn't believe them but notes that the meddling thing will only get more attention
- Friedman says "I realized this because other guys were saying to me "whats going on there?"'
- Says it is a "bad look" referring to Tre not having a contract
- Lots of people would say Flames have a good looking roster, wouldn't have trouble finding a GM

Absolutely nothing in there that implies that he thinks Tre is gone for sure. He seemed most critical of the fact that the Flames are bucking the trend of never leaving a guy unsigned.

He's just reporting that it isn't a done deal even if flames make playoffs and that the Flames holding off is a bit odd compared the rest of the league.

No idea how anyone got "Elliot Friedman believes Treliving won't be back next season" out of that.

He's been waiting a very, very long time to get his licks in so we shouldn't be surprised as this won't be the end of it until things get back to normal and the Oilers suck again.

god he's terrible but their writers and their broadcast crews really reflect the oilers fan base. Unprofessional humble braggarts who couldn't wait for this to happen so they could release a decades worth of bile in an explosion of bragging and false sentiment.

I'm just glad that the Flames don't have a spokesman like Specter or a broadcast crew full of idiots like the Oilers do. If we can take one piece of good in a sea of badness right now its that the Flames reporting is at least honest.

Lol they are 9 pts up on us and suddenly the last decade of turmoil is forgotten. Wte this is as classic oilers fan as it can get, just wait till their mediocre core stars to perform like usual and some teams start actually taking them serious and play them tougher. Just remember where you were last year Edmonton and the year before and the year before and ect. It's a quick fall back into that from where you are, nows not the time to be cocky lol.
