I think people react that way to Pillar because when he has bad ABs they are painfully bad. So it makes him seem like a way worse hitter than he is if you look at the overall numbers.

What makes it even sillier is that he doesn't have a really big platoon split. wRC+ vs. LHB = 90, wRC+ vs. RHB = 83. That's practically nothing.

My biggest issue with Pillar is that he tends to go into stretches where he gets pull happy, IMO that's not his game, he isn't a power guy so I would like to see him spray the ball around the field. I would rather see him take the approach that Travis does and that is to go up there looking to hit the ball the other way. I think that would allow him to let the ball travel a bit more and get a longer look at it before swinging, might help him recognize the off speed stuff.

My only thing there is is this the last year for the Jays to take a run before they look to re-tool? Why not go for it this year, if they are too far out of it come the deadline move Cain and guys like Estrada for what you can get, and then look to move guys like Donaldson, Martin and Happ in the offseason.
Donaldson is around for another 2 years, (I would be surprised if he took more than a 1 year deal out of arbitration, with him being able to test the free agent market after that).

While I'm way too lazy to look it up, Pillar's numbers in the regular season looked pretty good, but his numbers in the post season seemed to be atrocious. So is it that he can't handle the pressure, or is he that much more exposed against very good pitchers? That I'm not sure about, but I still think they Jays given their current situation, should use him as a trade chip for a better batter who can get on base.

Indians win Encarnacion. 3 plus an option.

Deal is thought to be worth 20M/yr or thereabout.

Source: The three-year deal for Edwin Encarnacion includes a club option for $20M. The buyout is $5M, which is part of the $60M guarantee.

They offered him 4 x $20 million and he turned it down FFS.
Jays nailed the market on EE, but he and his agent misjudged it.
Now he's taking less than the Jays offered, and he has no one to blame but himself and his agent.
The Jays couldn't wait around to see what would happen with him, they had to move on to plan B or risk ending up with no EE and no decent replacement.

Watch out for Cleveland next year, EE gives them a legit run producer smack dab in the middle of their lineup. Add a healthy Brantley, Salazar and Carrasco, and another year of experience for Lindor, Ramirez and Naquin and this team should even better than the one that went to the World Series.

Yeah, Cleveland was already going to be strong with just that pitching alone, but adding EE to an already very balanced offense should be deadly.

Toronto Blue Jays - Offseason Thread
Pretty disappointing especially the team he's going to. Him and his agent got too greedy but I don't like how management handled it. They should have made better use of the 5 days they had to negotiate and apparently they were suppose to be the first team Edwin's agent was going to talk to at the winter meetings but they cancelled to sign Pearce.

I'm all for how the Jays handled it. By some accounts the Jays said they were going to move fast and EE's agent thought they were bluffing. Jays made true on their word and signed Morales. Despite the Morales signing Edwin's agent decided to still gauge the market and the Jays did what they needed to do. How much would all of us be bitching if Edwin, Jose or Kendry's didn't sign because the Jays were holding because of Edwin? Hindsight is great but the Jays needed to do what they needed to do and the truth is that Edwin and his agent can say whatever they want, but they were simply looking for the best deal, and it didn't matter if it came from the Jays. The Jays made a compelling offer. EE and agent wanted to explore options, got greedy, probably never did their proper homework before hand to gauge other teams' interest, and they got burned. The precedent this will set for the future is that the Jays will likely make a very good offer, and if you don't make a loyal move, they will in fact move on.
I'm not happy with this years' team so far (compared to last season), but this off-season is still months away from being complete. I'm willing to see what management has in their plans before really passing judgement.

Still can't believe how soft the market was for him. I get that age is a concern, but the consistency he's produced at for the last few years along with DH only potential, I thought he would have done better. Obviously has the chance to thrive with a pretty good Cleveland lineup to bat in. Indians and Red Sox have pretty much left the rest of the AL in the dust.
