I find the more times I watch TFA the least I like it. Feels like an updated a new hope with prettyuch the same story line.

The ship on the lower left middle. The engines look like the ghost. It just might be like the potato from Empire or voyager in the phantom menace.

TFA isn't overly exciting but it has far less cringey moments than TPM. It also looks better.

Things in TFA that still bother me though are Leia hugging Rey, a complete stranger to her in the film, over the loss of Han Solo, and the interrogation scene between Kylo and Rey where they make constipated faces at each other for 2 minutes and she gets in his head.

I've reserved judgement on Rey's ultra fast learning/harnessing of the force until we get an explanation for her character's background in episode 8.

That all said, I'm confident R1 will be a good, fun movie thanks to the director, original trilogy timeline, darth vader, and the storyline being contained to one film.

I actually re watched TFA the other night for the fourth time, still a good movie. I agree with South Park in that it wasn't THAT good and we were influenced by the member berries for sure, but it was entertaining and most importantly they just didn't mess it up. I would rather a movie like this played it safe for round 1 than tried to reach for the stars and fall on its face. For Episode 8 I expect them to take some leaps of their own though and that will be the deterministic factor of success for this trilogy.. in my opinion anyway.

For Rogue One I just expect it to be an action thrill ride with iconic Star Wars figures and music leading me through an almost Shakespearian play full of tragedy and desperation. I don't expect this to have an overly happy ending for the characters given that none of them are seen in the OT, but we do know it has a good result for the Rebellion so that will be the take home feel good portion.

I am looking forward to the animal that is Vader. Early reviews have basically said this is almost a horror movie version of Vader, I can't wait.

In the spirit of Rogue One here is a picture of my recently painted Darth Vader from Imperial Assault:

Spoiler!

Its funny because even with the OT I've rewatched them multiple times.

There were lots of things that I really liked about TPM. Palpatine, the duel in the end, Ewan as Obi.

Same with AOTC there were lots of things that I really liked, again Palpatine, Ewan, Chris Lee

I honestly really liked ROTS, I placed it 3rd after ESB and ANH.

But though TFA has been on netflix and I own it, I just don't feel this super Star Wars nerdy urge to watch it again.

The review embargo ends today (some sites say 10am, some say 3pm MT), so we should be starting to see reviews coming soon.

Does anyone else love hilariously pretentious movie reviews? Because I do. Reading this is like some of those pitchfork reviews where is seemed like the reviewer took acid before he wrote the review or was just trolling the readers by making the dumbest possible metaphors and references to piss off fans of the band/artist.

Here's a taste. From the New Yorker.

Is it time to abandon the Star Wars franchise?

Quote:
Lobotomized and depersonalized, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” the latest entry in the film franchise, is a pure and perfect product that makes last year’s flavor, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” feel like an exemplar of hands-on humanistic warmth and dramatic intimacy. Sure, J. J. Abrams’s movie offered merely effectively packaged simulacra of such values—but at least he tried. The director of “Rogue One,” Gareth Edwards, has stepped into a mythopoetic stew so half-baked and overcooked, a morass of pre-instantly overanalyzed implications of such shuddering impact to the series’ fundamentalists, that he lumbers through, seemingly stunned or constrained or cautious to the vanishing point of passivity, and lets neither the characters nor the formidable cast of actors nor even the special effects, of which he has previously proved himself to be a master, come anywhere close to life.

I mean, seriously, why would you even review it if you are just going to bash it for not being an emotional art house dark dramedy.

The Force Awakens was not some hard-hitting emotional art-house drama, it was just a fun Star Wars movie, the Phantom Menace was garbage.

Sometimes I wonder what people expect from movies? Not every movie is going to be 'Schindler's List or Citizen Kane.'

If a film critic is going to crucify every movie that isnt one of those two movies then they need to find a new line of work.

At least in the case of TFA, perhaps a slightly original story line

I bet his review of a 2 hour black and white movie featuring a pencil eraser floating in a toilet over night to classical music with a woman's voice occasionally saying suffering called "Premenstrual suffering" was his 10/10 slam dunk best movie of the year.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story does exactly what it is supposed to do by incrementally expanding the Star Wars universe that we already know

The Force Awakens was absolutely perfect!

What it did was present the introduction of a new storyline and characters by taking the old story, copying it exactly, and then transitioning that story and those characters using the story and characters that you already know and love. It was a hand-off!

Textbook stuff.

And sure, people can bitch and moan that it wasnt 'original' but the fact of the matter remains that the vast majority of people dont and didnt care!

People wanted Star Wars! And they got Star Wars!

And they used that lack of creativity and burned a bunch of goodwill from fairweather fans, to get the new story rolling.

This was your drug-dealer's "The first one is free."

Oh, and did I mention that they made a crap-ton of money doing it?

And a crap-ton is: "The third highest grossing film of all time."

So...lots of people seem to have enjoyed it. Despite the fact that they were played. Manipulated hard. Myself included.

But its the same as going to see a Magic Show, sometimes you want to and allow yourself to be manipulated.

The only thing I did not like about TFA was the fact it was another Death Star.

I like good movies just as much as the next fella, but when I go to see American pie, I go in there knowing what to expect.

The early reviews of rogue 1 seem good. I am hoping it will be $65 (tickets and snacks) well spent dollars when I take my daughter to,the movie on Sunday

Sorry. I should clarify. TFA is much better than the Phantom Menace.

After leaving the theatres, I thought the Phantom Menace was a 5-6/10 and the TFA was a 9/10. Upon later viewings the Phantom was a 3/10 and the TFA was a 6-7/10.

There's definitely a 2-3 point ratings jump caused by the hype.

The Phantom Menace is largely just an odd movie for me. It has a ton of aspects that are aimed at children. However, the main plot line is largely based around overly complex political workings that go over the heads of most adults, me included. The movie also relies heavily on CGI, which has now become totally outdated...very odd. It was cool seeing lightsabers on screen again. Now that we live in a world of Star Wars saturation, people forget how much we wanted any kind of Star Wars content. The internet was still its infancy then. We didn't have all the toys, Legos, video games, etc....I watched the DVDs, played some X-Wing/Tie Fighter, but wanted more.

Tomatometer going strong at 84%, already certified fresh.

A general feel from what I've read through:

Will be interesting to see where between those the general audience falls.

I also read from a couple different 'high profile' sources that this will change the way we see A New Hope. Some recommendations to watch the film before/after Rogue One.

I'm getting the impression that the movie will serve almost as A New Hope, Part I. Which has me really amped.

I don't necessarily get the criticisms of another Death Star in TFA or even in Rouge One. To me the Death Star is the definition of Star Wars and if you don't include the horrible sequels 4 of 5 films have featured a Death Star. In fact the prequels could have used a Death Star or two to make them not horrible .

A planet destroying space laser is pretty cool and I look forward to seeing the original again in Rogue One.
