Backlund is approaching elite defensive forward territory. RNH scores more but is pretty one dimensional and average defensively. At their current salaries, it's a no brained.

One does not simply compare other players to The Tenderness

Iginla was one of the best players the Flames ever had and almost won the Hart trophy while missing the playoffs in 2002. Now Hopkins is no Iginla but when the team around you stinks, should he be responsible for that?

Hopkins has never finished a season with less than .6 points a game.

I don't deny Monahan is a better goal scorer or even a better player but if you're going to use Monahan's first 3 seasons and then ignore that Hopkins actually had a better first 3 seasons then that comes off as homerish. Both are young players who are struggling and need to be better and will be and a lot of teams would be interested in both players.

I hate defending the tenderness but when some posters (not you) claim they'd rather have Backlund, it comes off as silly. I'm the biggest Backlund fan and would take RNH in a second. He's better offensively and just as good if not better defensively.
Your argument here is that Hopkins is as good or better than Monahan. That is a poor argument.

1. Your points per game stat ignores the ability to stay healthy, which is a significant contribution to a team.
2. Ignoring the Nugent Hopkins most recent season's totals is over-compensating.

Nugent Hopkins has been a main cog of the Oilers and their ineptitude. The young Oilers have been poorly developed and coached and do not play a very complete game.

Hopkins strikes me as a player that would thrive in a situation where is was playing for a tight systems oriented coach, because I think he's a player who thinks the game at a high level and also has the skill to execute.

The Oilers are such a tire fire it's tough to say whether a player's successful traits or unsuccessful traits are products of the environment. Nuge is a better player than he's showing though.

RNH vs Backlund is interesting.

My personal opinion is "What role is up for grabs?"

If it is a 2nd line center, I will bank on RNH as I think he is a better playmaker, and getting off the Oilers would probably do his stats sheet well.

If my team needs a 3rd line center, I pick Backlund. RNH is NOT as good as Backlund defensively, he is not as fast as Backlund, and he is definitely NOT as strong.

Also, people have to forget pedigree here. So RNH was a 1st overall. So what? He has never really put up close to the amount of points that people still think he has. I would bank on him being a better scoring center based on his vision (I really liked him in Red Deer). The problem is, that he may already be 'ruined' so to speak.

It isn't RNH AINEC. That's hogwash. It really depends what role my team has available.

If after this season Backlund out-produces RNH, can we remove the AINEC nonsense? Pedigree shouldn't last an entire career after all.

Add the cap hit for RNH and it makes you think twice though.

I'm pretty sure "The Tenderness" did originate from HF as I heard it there before CP.

Oiler fans are a bit concerned

Aside from the 8-3 anamoly against the Ducks, they're winning alot of low scoring 1 goal games because of him.

Barring any injury to him, Calgary is suddenly a threat for a playoff spot in my opinion.

Things could get very interesting come Thursday if Philly comes up with a big game and the Flames keep going vs Arizona.

Have the Oiler fans already left Calgary Puck for the year? They made it to December which is better than mid November last year, I think.

The tenderness originated from a comment left in a tsn article, which was subsequently picked up and discussed here.

There was one in the Flames GT tonight actually. Calling out Johnny's supposed over the top celly (? didn't really see one) on his goal. CP replied with a fitting Yakupov Fleury-esque celly (I mean take your pick with the Oilers, right?).

Probably because Oilers broadcast flipped over to the Flames game right after losing in OT just to see the tie up Gaudreau goal. Must've been extra salt in the wound for fans up north tonight.
