Bump
You can now get a 2017 Parks pass online for free here
It caused the website to crash the other day but I ordered one today without any issue.

Ya and if you thought banff, johnson canyon, lake louise etc were crowded before, you might as well wait till 2018 for a visit.

Thats why you don't go to those places on weekends or after 10:00 or in the summer.. Though Johnson canyon is nice around Mother's Day or earlier. They also upgraded johnsons canyon this winter so it will be interesting if they made the walkways wider.
The park is so much more than those places. Even in the low effort Hike variety. Bow Glacier Falls is no more difficult than hiking to upper falls and in my opinion a far superior hike. Fairly empty for such a great easy hike.

So you can get a ticket for not having a park pass but it's free to enter the parks?

My understanding is that the park pass thing for 2017 is for statistical purposes for Parks Canada. I am not sure whether or not they will ticket for not having a pass. I would hope they do not ticket people for not getting a pass.
I did order my pass last night though, it took a few tries after the site crashed multiple times on me.

I agree with everyone here that my pass should be free but others should pay

Can't you just get one when you enter the park? I mean, if you are going there anyway...
Or will they expect you to buy the 2-year pass?
I am not sure if it will change it much. Who else will it attract that ordinarily would have been turned off by the price of a yearly pass?

It's not meant to attract anyone. It's to keep the existing pass holders that have passes that overlap the calendar year happy.

Sorry, That was kind of a tangential topic, about why so people think the national parks will be extraordinarily busy compared to non-free years.
Anyway I thought this "pass" was just a commemorative item that isn't even necessary. Maybe there is something that I am missing about is importance. Are you saying the people who bought passes just want something to hang off their rear view mirror?

A day pass for a car is almost $20, I know there are people who only head out to the mountains a few times a year who avoid the park for that reason. I imagine it's also a factor for people visiting from other provinces or countries. It's not a huge fee but it adds up on top of the increased price of camping/food/skiing etc. in the parks.

Some of the more popular spots are going to be ####shows when the great unwashed masses who were kept out by park fees in the past visit the parks.
This seems like a poorly thought out promotion.
It would have been better to do something like offer free admission to certain parks each month. Maybe trying to drive visitors to lesser known parks or popular parks during less popular times of year.
