No cup holders? That is the one thing I was looking forward to with a new rink in Calgary. That is my favourite thing about my seats in Arrowhead.
I was surprised too; that might have been only in the section that I was in but I was sitting in the corner 10 rows from the ice and those are premium seats.

I too was surprised in such a state of the art building there were no cup holders integrated with the seats. Yeah I get the space is at a premium but in this day and age when people are paying $$$ for seats they should have a better place to put their drink than the floor.

The intent of the building is to make the owners money.
Cutting Cup holders is probably seen as something which saves money and will have no impact on ticket purchases, right or wrong.

I know exactly what you are saying and I don't think that cupholders would matter much in Edmonton because the seats are close together so adding them would just increase the cost of the armrests. I do know that in other stadiums, and I can't remember where I heard this, but the Cowboys new stadium could add 20,000 seats if they removed all of the cupholders due to the space between the seats.

Standard capacity is 80,000. Even if every seat in the place has a cupholder, that would mean that for every 4 seats, they could have 5 without cupholders. In other words, the cupholders are accounting for 25% additional width to each seat.
I looked up the type of seats that Cowboys stadium uses. Called Quantum by Camatic. When you look at the photos it appears the cowboys stadium does not even have cup holders. But they do have armrests, which look like they take up the same amount of room as cup holders.
The site lists quantum style seats being available without armrests, that could increase capacity. Especially since they are on a rail which allows them to adjust the seats per row depending on the event.
Also, the capacity is listed as being expandable to 100,000 from 80kalready but I doubt it is related to either the cup holders or armrests as that would require way too much work to changeover.

Yeah, I think it's mostly because of a ridiculous amount of standing room only areas.
edit: from wiki
Quote:
The stadium seats 80,000,[17] making it the fifth largest stadium in the NFL by seating capacity. The maximum capacity of the stadium with standing room is 105,000.[18] The record attendance for an NFL game was set in 2009 with a crowd of 105,121.[
Or floor seating and temp seating for MMA and Basketball. Actual permanent seats almost certainly doesn't change. It would be insane to do something like remove the cup holders or arm rests from event to event. That would be a monumental task.
I cant believe I am talking about this, but if you click on Quantum and then look at the 2nd pic, it has cupholders. And they do not reduce the # of seats at all. Simply an extension of the armrest
Yeah and I reread my original post. I didn't mean to imply they removed the armrests to increase capacity. Just that the company sells the seats without them which would no doubt increase the seating capacity at any given venue.
Lol cupholdergate.
Moving on, please resume bickering about how much Edmonton sucks, how much public funding sucks and how much McMahon sucks.
Just to clarify, those Dallas seats do have cupholders. They are attached to the seat in front. In most of the pics you can't see them very well, but if you cycle through to the green ones, they are clearly there. With an eye to it, you can spot them on the darker ones as well.

They don't do it from event to event, but they can actually physically add more seats for big events like the Super Bowl or Final Four.
I watched a video about it a while ago. Because the seats are all mounted on rails, they can be pushed closer together, allowing them to add an extra seat or two to each row in each section for the major events.
For example, if the standard distance between seats is 21 inches (which is close, but not uncomfortably so), they can reduce that to 18 inches (which is still acceptable but approaching uncomfortable). By doing that, they can fit 7 seats in the same space where there is normally 6.

interesting discussion; since I brought it up, I thought I better find the exact source. I asked my buddies where this information came from (remove cupholders and add 20,000 to capacity) and apparently this information is directly from the Cowboys stadium tour that one of them went on. while ymmv, it does seem feasible especially if this information is being given on the stadium tour.

Here's the video I was talking about...
I was even right about the 21 inches to 18 inches thing.
Based on this, it looks like all the cup holders are built right into the back of the seat, so removing them doesn't seem to be an option.
