Looks like the head of the Airforce isn't on the same page as our Defense Minister and the government
http://ottawacitizen.com/news/nation...s-about-cf-18s
Quote:
looks like that memo didn’t reach the desk of Lt. Gen. Mike Hood, the commander of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Testifying back in April to a Commons defence committee, Hood never mentioned anything about a capability gap. In fact, he said he was comfortable that the CF-18s could continue operating until 2025 – or even beyond. That was more than enough time for a full replacement of the fleet, he suggested. So the committee went back for clarification on that point. The RCAF obliged with an answer this week.
“The Commander of the RCAF is confident that, based on the latest information available, there is sufficient capacity to support a transition to a replacement fighter capability based on the ongoing projects and planned life extension to 2025 for the CF-18,” it noted in a statement provided to the defence committee this week.
“New upgrades to F/A-18 (CF-18) systems are being developed and implemented by Allies, which would reduce operational, technical and cost risks to Canada’s CF-18 fleet if additional capability improvements are required.”

Well he's right if we're sticking with the CF-18 or buying second echelon fighters like the Super Hornet, at that point then we might as well buy another fleet of a 100 or so Super Hornets.
I frankly will take the word of the head of the Airforce who knows the capabilities and requirements of the airforce over the CDS, especially this CDS, who was a special forces operator.
If people are going to listen to this CDS then they should have certainly listened to the last CDS who was an airforce general and pushed hard for the F-35 as the only logical replacement for the F-18s.

Israel orders another 17 F-35's to bring their fleet up to over 50. They will have their first operational squadron by years end

A look at the Super Hornet program
https://ipolitics.ca/2016/11/25/the-...ake-any-sense/
Quote:
he Defence Policy Review was supposed to be released in early 2017. Surely this week’s replacement decision could have waited until then — particularly when National Defence Minster Harjit Sajjan admits that the Super Hornets will not be fully operational until the late 2020s. Meanwhile, Australia plans to phase out their Super Hornets in favour of F-35s. The U.S. Navy plans to phase out its Super Hornets by 2040, giving Canada roughly 10 years of common use before the Super Hornet becomes prohibitively expensive to maintain — and technically redundant. By the time the first Canadian Super Hornet is operational, the U.S. Air Force will have transitioned to the F-35 for NORAD operations, which will require upgrades to NORAD infrastructure. This sole-source purchase is not a logical solution, especially when there will only be 18 Super Hornets to fill the “capability gap” that, according to the minister, 77 CF-18 Hornets cannot meet today.
|
Quote:
Economically, the decision is also suspect. The CF-18 and the Super Hornet are two distinctly different airplanes both in size and content. The Super Hornet is physically 25 per cent larger and the two aircraft have no internal avionics systems in common. So the RCAF will need to support two platforms, two training systems, and two maintenance and logistics systems during the transition. That will be hugely expensive.
Using Australian and Kuwaiti purchases as indicators, Canadians will spend roughly US$5 billion to procure a marginal capability for the 2030s that will not meet current commitments, will be technologically inferior by then and will logistically expensive.
This simply isn’t a cost-effective path to take. The economic rationale for this decision rings hollow for a government not known to concern itself with military commitments.

Nearly 1,000 members of the Canadian Armed Forces reported being sexually assaulted over the past year – and one-quarter of women say they’ve been targeted at least once during their careers, a landmark Statistics Canada survey of sexual misconduct in the military has found.
|
Quote:
That rate of sexual assault represents about 1.7 per cent of military personnel – dramatically higher than the comparable rate of 0.9 per cent for the general population.
|
Quote:
The Statcan survey also found full-time female personnel were four times more likely to be assaulted than their male counterparts.
That ratio was even higher – nearly one in 10 – for female personnel in the part-time reserve force.

Not acceptable.

Agreed
this could actually become a bigger scandal then the Airborne incident.
On a global scale there has to be a monumental change in how this is going to be dealt with.

If we buy now, we won't have the SH's operationally ready until 2030? Is that right? That is crazy. How is that an interim solution to fulfill a capability gap? What is the point if they're not available for 14 years? That just makes no sense at all.

That poor planning has cost hundreds of millions of dollars in wasted taxpayer dollars, made equipment less available for training and operations, and hurt National Defence’s long-term financial flexibility.
Ferguson says there is a growing gap — about $1 billion over the next 10 years — between the department’s funding and how much it will need to maintain its planes, ships and other equipment.
That will have a further impact on the availability and readiness of hardware for training and missions.

The military is supposed to have 60,500 trained military personnel, but the report says the actual number has fallen from 58,000 in 2011-12 to 56,300 last year.

Senate earning their money?
Quote:
A Senate committee has tossed political hurdles in front of the Trudeau government's plan to rejoin the ranks of peacekeeping nations, demanding more funding for the military and a clear end-date to whatever United Nations mission is undertaken.
Senators are also demanding the Liberal government seek the approval of Parliament before a deployment takes place.
The report, with eight recommendations, by the committee on national security and defence comes as the federal cabinet is set to debate, next month, where in Africa to contribute peacekeepers.

What's the point of having soldiers if you can't abuse/misuse them......
It is a Canadian staple, dating back to the Ross Rifle.

It was also cause for laughter when people used to call Harper a Neo-Con.
Pretty sure a large part of the Neo-Con MO wasn't letting the armed forces stagnate.
