McIlrath would have been a fantastic NHL defender 15 years ago. Too bad for him that he wasn't born a bit earlier.

Chris Johnston @reporterchrisThe condition on the #NYR-#FlaPanthers trade: If Dylan McIlrath plays 30 games this season, NYR get 2018 7th-rounder.

McIlrath is a good defenseman. Given a bit of a leash and some ice time he'll establish himself pretty well.

Guess the Panthers needed to dump a contract otherwise they could have just claimed him off waivers.Unless they plan to keep him on the farm and wanted him pre-cleared?

Both were recently on waivers if I am not mistaken. Both in the minors now.. or at the least minor eligible

Still think Kampfer might be something. Not sure what, though.

He's 28. He is what he is at this point.

Kampfer is what he is, but he's a capable replacement defenseman who can play as high as your 2nd pair if you need him to since he's got wheels and some skill. He's struggled with consistency and being effective on every single shift for every single game, but he's a quality NHL player. Just put him with an effective defender and he can add value to your lineup.
I know little about McIlrath, but at one point people thought he would be a quality defensive-defenseman, right?

From what I have seen, he could absolutely be a quality defensive defenseman. He's the rare type that, while physical in the classic and endearing pre-two-line pass era way, doesn't treat the puck like a hot potato in his own zone. Probably not unlike Jokipakka, except with a mean slap shot.

And without Jokipakka's skating ability. The big knock on McIlrath's game is a lack of footspeed.
FWIW, Ranger fans think he is a capable bottom-pairing guy NOW, and they feel he could develop into a decent second pairing shut-down defender given time.

It's not his straight up speed but rather lateral movement.
