Buying Music Online
Hey guys..
I've decided to start going digital with my music purchases, since every time I buy a CD I just dump it onto my mp3 player and the CD goes straight onto the shelf.
So far i've been using Emusic.com. Great site for indie stuff, plus no DRM on the files. However their selection can be limited. I've also used Puretracks.com, but there is DRM on their downloads. Itunes isn't really an option for me because I use a Creative mp3 player, not an Ipod.
Anyone use any other services? What has good selection, good prices? And if I am getting music with DRM on it, what are my options for backing it up and making sure I don't have to buy the album again if I switch mp3 players?
Just looking to see what some other experiences are with online music purchasing.
Thanks.

They are in Russia. The US is trying to pressure Russia into closing down AllOfMP3 but so far hasn't been successful.
They comply to Russian law, but RIAA and Artists don't see a penny so this is a battlefront in the copyright wars.
Then again, I could have answered your question by just saying, "Yes"

Hey whats the deal with allofmymp3's or whatever and ipods....i know some downloading sites put licenses on the file that only lets you sync the songs with certain mp3 players? (the most famous being itunes + ipod)....would i be able to throw the songs onto an ipod?
then the only issue i'd have is giving my creditcard info away to a russian company...

Mp3s from allofmp3.com work just fine on ipods.
I can't find any reports of shady business as far as CC numbers are concerned. I've had no problems.
Morality/Ethics and all that aside, allofmp3.com is by far the best source (legal or illegal) for music. Great selection/great prices/great encoding options/easy to navigate.
Personally I check emusic.com (I want to support what they are trying to do) first, then allofmp3.com.
I've read that a small portion of allofmp3.com does go to royalties. Of course not nearly as much as the RIAA would like though.

Just to corroborate what you are saying, I haven't used allofmp3.com, but do frequent some sites where lots of people do use it and none have reported any CC issues.

And now VISA will no longer process payments to allofmp3.com
Apparently the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (an international umbrella group for CRIA,RIAA, et al) asked VISA to take this measure.

There a quite a few forums on there about Ebay users in Easter Europe (some think they work for allofmp3) that will allow you to make a payment to them (legal transaction, they sell some type of bs product), they will setup the temp account and email you the username/password - they take a 10% commision.
I have also heard of negotiations with Paypal but there is nothing on their site that mentions it.

PayPal pulled the plug on allofmp3.com a year ago.
I wouldn't be surprised to se NetTeller get involved in something like this, but right now XROST is providing a similar intermiediary payment service.

And once the allofmp3 customer gets his neteller account, he might as well get into online poker while he is at it, that will really show the government! Next thing you know, we'll all be buying crack with our neteller account!

Though I don't promote posting of links on the site (due to its international flavour), as far as I was aware the downloading and uploading of music was still 100% legal in Canada isn't it? I thought that was the result of the most recent court decision.
There's no way I'm locking into some DRM crap from Apple or Microsoft or elsewhere; I've read too many issues around limited number of transfers or having to repurchase entire libraries just because your computer crashed and such.

That's what I'm worried about. I recently downloaded the new Tragically Hip album from Puretracks.com. Apparently I can transfer to devices and can burn to disc unlimited times. There is DRM on it but I think it prevents me from transfering to some other computer, without transfering the lisence as well.
But I'm thinking if I burn it to a disc, I should be able to rip from that disc to any device, any computer, just like I would a normal CD. Hopefully that wouldn't degrade the quality at all. I dunno.

You are correct. Canadian courts ruled that the levy paid on blank recording media was to compensate artists for downloaded works. In Canada it is legal to download music, although if you like what you hear, so SOMETHING to try and make sure the artist is repaid.

If you were to share those songs over a P2P network, the people receiveing them wouldn't be able to listen to then. Usually you have a limit on how many other devices you can share the music with.

Puretracks is already compressed. You can burn it to CD, then Rip it and copy it all you want. But you do lose quality each of those step since the music is transcoded each time. (caveat - ripping back off the CD you can do losslessly, but the files will be 2 or 3 times the size of your current MP3s)

i've used allofmp3.com as well for very hard to find stuff (they have an excellent selection of European bands), and actually i just put a payment through to them on my VISA last month. when did they stop processing payments? or maybe it just applies to US VISA cardholders
but i generally just torrent most of my music anyways. for stuff i really like, i go and buy the CD. same with games, movies, etc. i refuse to buy something until i can sample it

It was Tuesday that it was reported that VISA was taking this action.
