Yeah, the top line will turn it around. The problem still lies with the fact that there is nowhere near enough legitimate talent surrounding Guadreau and Monahan yet.

This team was rubbish through 82 games last year. Maybe we can wait past the 3 game mark to declare them rubbish again

I only casually watched the pre-season Flames off and on were they this disjointed and lackluster?

That was 2 non-playoff teams in an epic battle. Have to turn it around soon. This team can't afford to be much below 0.600 after the first 20 games and expect to make the playoffs.

in positive news, backlund, jokipakka and johnson were rock solid tonight.

that bennet line, just like preseason, looked ok but doesn't actually generate goals. (recycled from last gdt).

top line, gaudreau, have been completely ineffective (why did they get the dzone start late in the 3rd against the sedins, seems like weak coaching).

Weak coaching.

We have a good back up goalie.

Yeah, it's hard to believe that this is the same team that won the Stanley Cup in June.

I second this. "Playoffs" are a bloody a pie in the sky until this team has more depth. It only has 2/3 of a first line and a plug for RW. I know it's not easy, but this has been the biggest issue for the Flames for a long enough time now. Must be addressed.

Yeah I mean they are supposed to be better this season. I think that's why people react so strongly. If they don't make progress now, when is it supposed to happen?

That would be fair if Versteeg wasn't the best player on the line so far. Johnny passed it to the Oilers for a breakaway and is probably leading the team in giveaways. Monahan is a pylon. How can you call Versteeg a plug when he's outplaying his linemates?

They're not there. It's just so plainly obviously they are not. Having those expectations of this team will be like hitting our heads repeatedly against a brick wall. I just wish they'd be honest and say we're still in the middle of a LONG and arduous rebuild that might never work out. But for PR reasons they won't tell the truth.

That or the system sucks. Seriously it appears the only way we can score is if we give up glorious opportunities to the opposing team at the other end. When we tighten up defensively we have zero offense. And then his odd SO choices. Johnny? Sure he looked a lot better that game. Monohan? He's looked like total garbage. Versteeg? Hasn't score a SO goal in 5 years. Where's Tkachuk, the only guy to get one in preseason? Where's Frolik/Brouwer/Backlund, probably our best forwards thus far. Just weird choices. Quickly losing confidence in Gulutzan. Very Eakins-esque, it's like he thinks he has these great unorthodox revolutionary ideas but in reality it's just baffling and terrible.

I am pretty sure that Monahan and Gaudreau,at a combined 13 mil a year are supposed to be the drivers, regardless of who they are playing with.

By the timw this team gets comfortable with the new system and it's new players the playoffs will be out of reach.

You can't expect stability when you keep changing coaches.
