Ducks sign Rakell (6 yrs, $3.8M AAV)
Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
Rickard Rakell agrees to terms with ANA on a six-year deal with an AAV of $3.8M.

$365k in cap space according to cap friendly.
Although they can get ~$3.5 million in cap space sending down Stoner, Ritchie, Sorsen and Larsson.
They are going to need to unload a significant contract. All the speculation is Fowler.

Bob Murray isn't a good GM, this is just another example. Rakell is a good player but they should've signed him for one or two years, not six imo. Need a bit more time to see what he really is. Especially because they are a budget team.

That's why you gamble on these low cap hit long term deals, betting that it'll be a bargain in the last half, where as if you sign a bridge deal and the player keeps improving you are looking at a much bigger cap hit when the bridge deal is over.
Look at TJ Brodie. If Treliving would have signed him to a 2 or 3 year deal we'd be looking at $6 million + in the next year or two. Now they've got him locked up at $4.6 until 2020.
Also, the Ducks have been an internal budget team for years, but they aren't this year. They are already at the cap and don't even have their best young Dman signed yet. Looks like a cap team now for at least a couple years.

Hmmmm didn't realize they are a cap team now. My perspective changes a bit with that knowledge.
Don't get me wrong, I didn't think it's a terrible contract per se (for a cap team with less junk on the roster), I'm just not sure Rakell is much more than a good top 9 guy. It's more about how Murray seems to be taking a page from the Flames playbook and filling his roster with highly paid depth players. If Bieska, Depres, Stoner, Bernier... and possibly Rakell cost him Lindholm or Fowler, then he made a mistake here. I would've prioritized Lindholm on a long term deal and dealt with Rakell later.
I understand the expansion argument in relation to Fowler but not having Lindholm signed at this point is a joke. He is actually worth the money, he's a stud.

No one in the league is going to bend over to help out the ducks in this situation.
They are going to squeeze every drop out of them in any Fowler deal, which is likely why it hasn't gone down yet.

The Ducks' biggest mistake was not moving Fowler at the draft before the crunch came. Now they are up against the wall and are going to take a haircut on Fowler.

Probably needed to take money back from Toronto in the Andersen trade. At least they waited until after Toronto paid the bonus due which helps them money wise, but still counts against the cap.

TBH I'd be looking to move a contract other than Fowler if I were the Ducks.

But then they will have to expose one of Vatanen, Fowler or Lindholm at the expansion draft unless they protect 4 D because of Bieksa's nmc.

Moving Fowler also helps with the expansion draft though.
Lindholm, Vatanen, Manson, Fowler and possibly even Despres, should he bounce back, are probably all 'protection' worthy. Bieksa has a NMC and while it's probably more likely they buy him out instead of wasting an expansion protection spot on him the Ducks have a lot of defenders heading into the expansion draft that 'require' protection. Beyond that they have Theodore and Larrson who are exempt.
Lindholm is their number 1, Vatanen and Despres are signed long-term. Bieksa has a NMC, Manson, Theodore and Larrson are set to become RFA with some cost control. Fowler has this season and next until he is a UFA. Dealing Fowler, assuming they get back proper value, probably makes the most sense actually. For the short-term, yeah it probably makes sense to try and just get rid of Stoner or something, but long-term, something needs to give on that defense and Fowler is the likely candidate.
Fowler has been considered the odd man out for quite some time, so much so that the NHL did a piece on him not being traded earlier:

"You hear your name tossed out there," Fowler said. "I've heard that before even at recent trade deadlines, but this time with the position the Ducks are in and some of the salaries, it just seemed like it was pretty real."
