Fantastic news.
I'm in Vegas atm so I just tossed some money on the Flames to win the cup. Looking forward to coming back in the spring/summer to collect.

Policing? Over hockey opinions?
That type of thing will basically demotivate people from posting viewpoints that differ from the majority.
I don't think we need to keep score over who is right and wrong
I think opinions should be debated and well defended. But if someone had a rationale argument that ended up being wrong what's the issue?

IMO, it's that type of community policing that helps maintain a higher quality in a board. Otherwise you get a Don Cherry-esque community: Tonnes of bluster and bravado up front, preening when they get something right, and radio silence when they're wrong.

Two things about the bolded.
1. Good. I prefer radio silence of some of those posters.
2. So basically 90% of the Oilers Fans posters here round Novemberish.

BT comes through here... but I disagree with those saying that Johnny stays if we win a cup. TJ will get a raise before 6 years, SB and Tkchuk will be on second contracts. A cup/close to cup means higher salary expectations and, like the hawks, we will be leaking out good players yearly and have 2 full lines of minimum wagers. I'm going to enjoy the hell out of watching Johnny while he's still here. He's gone in 6.

6 years is lots of time. 8 is too much time. Things could go stagnant also.

Sounds like fun discussing the same viewpoints in a board-wide circle jerk of the same opinion.
The board does well enough keeping track of outlandish claims and people slinky away on their own. Just ask WhereRUChrisO'Sullivan.

No one, including Johnny himself know at this point what he's going to do in 6 years. It's useless to even speculate what might happen at that point.
Worry about the problems of 6 years from now, six years from now.

"Community policing" as in the collective community taking it upon itself to maintain a certain quality or position, not as in badges, handcuffs, and prisons. I didn't think I'd need to explain that term to you, but I guess that teaches me to make assumptions.
As for the rest, opinions and viewpoints are fine: I think... IMO... That leads to quality debate, as it inherently recognizes the validity of other viewpoints.
But hardline statements: There is no... I guarantee that... and following up with belittling or dismissing those who disagree is a different matter.
Do you want a board full of Don Cherrys or Kelly Hrudeys?

Wait, so she'll call her one son Matty like it ain't no thang, but goes out of her way to call her other son who's universally called Johnny, as John?
Someone list all our contrarian posters and find out which one is his Johnny's mom.

Lol!
You wrote post after post about how foolish it would be if management implemented the Gio cap and now that it's done, you're calling it a great deal?
Your posts couldn't be more of a joke...
I personally am thrilled that this is all over. Mostly so the level of incompetency in some posters might finally die down.

It's just painful hearing people speak this concretely about something none of us have the faintest idea about.
So many things can change in six years, including the salary cap number (the biggest factor your post is missing).
No one knows, and speaking with such a definitive tone is beyond futile.

I'm re-watching all the Johnny highlights from the last 2 seasons. There's like 1+ hour of content. I. Can't. Stop.

I'm with Jiri, let it be. Maybe Gaudreauvertime valued Gaudreau's 1-3 UFA years waaay more than 99% of us? I think that's what it boils down to. His posting style is pretty confrontational, but it's not the end of the world... it's just hockey talk. As far as the argument itself goes, the Gio cap appears to be real but I think most people accepted that UFA years would be outside of that. It looks like that's what they were wrangling over the whole time, maybe you're both right?
I think the way he posts was most of the problem, not the fact that his opinion was different. No need to police his opinions, but he could be less abrasive in the way he posts.

I got the news at about 11am at work, but couldn't login and post until now.
Fantastic news and BT is sure earning his wizardry title. I don't know if he's at Gandalf or Dumbledore level.
Like most, I wanted 7 or 8 years, but 6 will do -- the cap hit is fantastic. I thought he was going to get 7.2ish. Hopefully the Flames cup window opens next year and is open for the length of his contract. This also allows more space to sign Bennett, Elliot (or another goalie) and Tkachuk later on.
Can't wait until Wednesday to spank the Oilers. Oh and the 'Around the League Report' was fantastic Gaskal.

...and a few of the old guard "Lanny McDonald" posters around to smack things down every so often. He was a great nuclear deterrent.
On to the real topic. Happy it's done and the deal seems reasonable to me. I like the flexibility for both team and player. Given Johnny is a little squirt I always worry about his longevity and if he can keep the pace up. I hope he can.

I'm just glad it's over. Wish they had the preseason to work on who would fit in on that top line. Whatever it will have to be a work in progress.
