Default tire size for hondas

Just wondering if it matters if I get smaller winter tires than my all season tires. I have a 2003 honda civic si and the tire size is 185/65r15. I wanna get new rims and 14 inch tires since smaller tires are better in the winter plus its cheaper.

So I guess the real question is does the 185 part of the tire have to be the same as the original tire?
Does the 65 part of the tire have to be the same as the original tire?

Or can I get like lets say 170/65r14

Thanks

because you are going to a smaller rim size the "65" part should be bigger so that it doesnt effect your speedo that much. That number is the profile so a higher number with smaller rims will make up for the 1" from a 15" to a 14". not sure the proper amount to go though. maybe like to a 75 ish?? the 185 part is the width of the tire should be able to stay the same.

Go to www.tirerack.com, put in your car, and select a winter tire/wheel package. There should be a 14" option and you'll see some available tire size.

I know on my car they wouldn't sell me less than 215's for width because of the load rating of my car (I wanted narrower.. I'm sure it could be done) and I was able to move up to a 55 profile on 16" rims (couldn't go smaller because thats all that fits over the brakes. They won't offer smaller than you can go).

Go with a slightly narrower tire. It's better for snow.

175/65/14

Why is a narrow tire better for snow?

The same reason a heavier car is better on snow. A smaller contact patch means more pressure on the ground.
