Canes sign Nakladal (1yr, $600k)
Michael Smith @MSmithCanes
#Canes ink D-man Jakub Nakladal to one-year deal. Nakladal a right shot. Played with CGY last year, Czech in WCH.

Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the National Hockey League's Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has agreed to terms with defenseman Jakub Nakladal (YA-kuhb nahk-LA-dahl) on a one-year contract. The deal will pay Nakladal $600,000 for the 2016-17 season.

Not sure if it is a 1 way or 2 way

Good for Nakladal. Would have liked him back with the Flames. Probably a one way contract.
I hope we dont end up signing Grossman over Nakladal

Good for Nak. I think he'd still be a way better option than Grossmann, but I'm glad that he's getting another chance.

good for him. Really liked him in Calgary and hoped he'd be back. All the best!
hope they don't sign Grossmann instead. Just give the spot to Kulak, he's earned it.

I know it was a long shot but I was still hoping he'd end up back here.

Too bad. Better option than Wideman. Man that's a horrible contract.

Have to think it's a 1-way contract. Very happy for the guy and equally disappointed he's not going to fully breakout into this league as a Flame.
With Russell also signed, this pretty much guarantee's that Kulak made the team correct? Perhaps the hold-up all along was waiting to see if the position was going to be filled internally instead.

At $600K, one versus two way doesn't matter much to the team. A great signing. I wish the Flames had done that deal.

Definitely would rather have Nakladal than Wideman.
Grossmann is a different player than Nakladal and Wideman.
Grossmann is a Engelland type. If the FLames sign Grossmann it is because they feel they need another pure banger. I doubt he would play every game anyways. He'll be the 7th an play periodically. Kulak would probably go up and down.
The picture is quite clear now. I do think they will sign Grossmann as the 7th. Kulak and Wotherspoon will be first call ups.
Those thinking they don't need Grossmann, consider that if any one of the top 6 goes down to injury, suddenly Kulak and Wotherspoon are regulars and the 7th. From I've seen Wotherspoon is not better than Grossmann and probably never will.
Signing Grossmann is good insurance cause you can pretty much guarantee that one of the top 6 will be injured at some point. Playoff teams typically need to be 8 deep in NHL defensemen.
Right now there are only 7 under contract:
Gio
Brodie
Hamilton
Jokipakka
Engelland
Wideman
Kulak

A 1 way contract for 600K?
Not sure why the flames didn't offer that. Low risk, reasonable reward opportunity

This is kind of really maddening when we're about to sign Grossman.
Doesn't make sense.

Dang, my poor eyes thought this said Calgary, not Canes, and I got excited. I was really hoping he'd be back as I liked what I saw last year.
I hope he finds success in Carolina, although not so much it becomes a Stralman-like regret.

Looking at the roster Nak probably thought he would get minor icetime/chance of being sent down over a potentially guaranteed spot on the Canes back end. Its a hard sell for the guy who wants to break into the NHL by only playing a handful of games.
Brodie - Gio
Hamilton - Wideman
Engelland -Jokipakka
That's your top 6 with Wideman/Kevin switching if needed.
Grossman is probably okay with being the 7th guy, subbing in when he's needed or taking over for injuries.
