Smyth94 plays Dr Phil...
West Ed isn't as bad as browna says, but when I go to Chinook mall or Market Mall in Calgary, West Ed looks 10 years older.
Is it true that West Ed loses money?
For big as West Ed is, I only go there for the firing range, movie and HMV

What's strange is how Edmontonians defent that eyesore to the death.
It's outdated, ugly, overrated, it's impossible to park there and the quality of stores get worse through time.
If I lived in Edmonton I'd probably concede that one.

Come on, don't hold back any bitterness in there.

Petting Zoo eh? I'm sold. There's no way Calgary will ever catch up now.

I dunno how any Edmontonian can defend WEM. It single handedly killed any life in your downtown for decades. Don't you feel embarassed that your city is known for a spirit-sucking suburban hell-hole as it's biggest attraction?

It's not about what looks newer. The Mall attracts tourists - Chinook mall or Market Mall just don't do that.
Sure, City Center in Edmonton looks upscale, but it's hardly pulling in out of town tourists.
WEM has the reputation because of being large, and everything under one roof.

Ha! Calgary's downtown is ghost-town after 6. If you want a real-downtown, go to the big 3. Nice skyscrapers and all, but a ghost-town at night.
I won't be embarrased the mall has attracted upscale stores (and many more to come along the way), and millions of dollars in the Edmonton economy.

Up scale store?
I'll give you Swarski (sp?) even though it is smaller then most others
I wouldn't call it "up scale" in comparison to Chinook or West Ed. West Ed has alot of low budget, cheap stores... which is why I go there
It is big, and alot of stuff under one roof, I'll give you that.

If Edm was a 1M city, that would be ~ 1/30th of the Cdn population ... about 3.3%, so just under one third of Edm retail is done at WEM??? No way.

Not a chance there was. I've been to the mall at least 2-3 times every year, and I never saw it there.

The thing is Edmonton's downtown is a ghost-town BEFORE 6 as well.

Europa boulovard has pretty upscale stores.
Others in the mall include FCUK, Zara, Abercrombie, Urban planet, Underground, etc.

Ok, I'll give you Underground as well. Those other 3, I don't know, I'm not a fashion expert, but I do remember Underground looking pretty snazzy... FCUK is a minature version compared to their Calgary counterparts.
All in all, their "up scale" stuff makes up 2% of the mall.
West Ed is economical. I don't know why you want to fight so hard that its "up scale"

It was an achor in the 80's, first time I went to an ikea was WEM ... care to make an online wager?

That may be 'upscale' in Edmonton ... not here.

Because it does have upscale stores. If you don't notice them, you must be the one shopping at Zellers instead of Europa Boulovard.
I don't know why you, are other Calgarians want to fight so hard and not give recognition to Alberta's number one tourist attraction. Obviously something must be attractive for people across the country to visit it.
North Calgary Mall will not even be comparable to South Edmonton common, let alone WEM

Meh, whatever floats your boat.
IMO lots of shopping choices - best place to go shopping in Alberta.
