can't wait for another mall to house the exact same stores that every other mall in the world has. good thing Calgary itself doesnt have a Gap or Banana Republic.

nobody cares about the size of malls here, dude. besides, WEM is more like 3 malls in one....you get 2 or 3 of every store except that they are seperated at different sections of the mall.

Even if size matters, the quality has taken a huge nosedive.
Back in the 80's, it was a destination...both for the waterpark, Fantasyland, rink, minigolf, hotel, and, of course, shopping.
Retail wise is now the biggest bust...I remember the big Ikea in there. The car dealer. Bourbon St was bustling. I think there were some other major dept stores in there too.
Went there last year before the last Flames game up there. Any specialty store (like The Sony Store, art stores) that didn't have mechandise under 10$, was dead...I mean dead...and we drove around 10 mins to find parking it was the busy on a Saturday. Nevermind every 6th storefront was boarded up. Many independant stores..before it was a lot of chains, which have since pulled out.
I think that Casino took over an old retail outlet....and that wing, leading to the casino has a dollar store, adult store, convience store, and the only independant pay day advance/bail bond place I've ever seen in the mall. It should have been called "The Docks", it just needed a tatoo parlour.
Galaxyland has gone downhill, I didn't even see Bourbon St, but heard that those big bars pulled out. The hotel needs a full renovation..it and its rooms just have difffernt layers of paint that constitute "renovations" since 1985. Just because its still the only hotel with a "Truck Room", doesn't mean the idea, even if neat in 1985, doesn't mean its not stale and still neat in 2006. All the dolphins and other fish have gone. Don't think that Sub tours around anymore.
The Waterpark is probably the main drawing point to that place.
I was genuinely suprised how far downhill the mall up there has gone down in the last 10 years...novelties such as the waterpark and maybe fantasyland for small kids would be the only draw for people to return to that place more then once. The shopping expereince is now pretty dreadful.

I usually go there several times a year and I would agree that some of the areas are run down. But they have expanded A LOT. Driving range on the roof and target range. There are also plans to add appartment towers and a 16 floor office building.
"the mall attracts anywhere between 10 million and 20 million people each year placing the mall at par with the two Disney parks of the United States, with about half of that number being tourists from outside of the Edmonton area. The mall is so big that it alone accounts for 1% of all retail sales in Canada (1990)."
http://www.arch.mcgill.ca/prof/sijpk...asz/u1/wem.htm
I think it is a pretty good mall if it accounts for 1% of Canada's retail sales...numbers a little old but they are probably the same if not more and same numbers as Disney Land.
But go ahead an harp on Edmonton just because the Oilers are there.

The total economic impact of West Edmonton Mall on the economy of Alberta was a staggering $1.2 billion in income annually
Is that low?????????
"Over $339 million in taxes accrued to all three levels of government annually."
Is that low????????

WEM is a total dive. I went there last year, and their decor is straight from the 80s.
On the other hand, when I was passing by the Hooters, a waitress whose back was turned to me decided to scratch her butt while serving a customer. I got a great view of her thonged ass. I was very surprised to see that women in Edmonton actually knew what thongs were.

It'll balance out Calgary, so it's a great location for it (if even a little too north). The south already has Deerfoot Meadows, Chinook, South Centre (to a lesser degree). The North? Deerfoot Mall. Whoopie ding dong dandy.

who knew the world's largest white elephant would generate so much attention.
What's strange is how Edmontonians defent that eyesore to the death.
It's outdated, ugly, overrated, it's impossible to park there and the quality of stores get worse through time.
If I lived in Edmonton I'd probably concede that one.

I guess you've never been to Market Mall and Sunridge? Crowfoot Centre is pretty much the same thing as Deerfoot Meadows as well.

A little old? 16 years? I can guarantee that both the 1% of total retail sales is nowhere even close, 16 years later from your link. As I said, that place has hit the skids in the past 10 years especially, nevermind the increase in reatil outlets/malls across the country since then. Quality of WEM retail went first, and, slowly, vacancy rates have dipped.
And not even close to Disneyland and Epcot numbers. Over 30 million people go there now. Up from 12 million back in the early 90's.
http://www.scottware.com.au/theme/feature/crowds.htm
Some more recent numbers of West Ed, shows it, like the general feel of the mall, is stagnant. If the claim of 22 million in 1990 was correct, according to this link, it hasn't grown at all:

Not that this stat matters anyway, but dropping numbers with no source or in anyway comprehending what the stat means is useless.
If Edm was a 1M city, that would be ~ 1/30th of the Cdn population ... about 3.3%, so just under one third of Edm retail is done at WEM??? No way.

Never an Ikea in West Ed. There were 2 Bay's, one closed down in favour of SilverCity Famous theaters.
When did Bourbon St stop ''bustling"?
There still are major dept stores in there. No less than the ones before.
Chinatown wing was added recently.

Name these chains that pulled out
Since 2003, the mall has attracted an increasing number of retailers including American Eagle Outfitters, Abercrombie & Fitch (2006), French Connection UK, Hollister Co., Old Navy, Tommy Hilfiger, Swarovski, bebe, BCBG, Lacoste, and Zara.
Go to European boulovard, and you have all these upper class stores (Urban, etc.)

Did you stay there? It's obviously thriving, difficult to find a room.

What other fish?
Yes, dolphins have gone - for good reason. They were replaced with more ''mall-friendly'' sea lions, which have regular full shows.

Combined with many other things to do, from a tourist perspective. I've been there many times, so I only go for shopping. I remember my first time there, it was a great experience.
Of course if you go once a year, you'll eventually get bored of it. That's not what it's for - it's a tourist mall.

The shopping experience got better. The number of visitors has increased significantly.
What happened is, over the last 10 years, with the Oilers and Eskimos success and the Flames missing the playoffs, Stampeders as for the most part, celler dwellers, changed your viewpoint on Edmonton. It made you jealous, just like many Flames fans, and thus, try to put a negative spin to everything Edmonton.
Admit it - almost every one of your posts re: Edmonton are negative.
The Mall will be expanded
Permission from the City of Edmonton was recently granted for an expansion. This will include additional retail space, a facility for sports, trade shows and conventions, a 12-story office building, and a 600-unit apartment building, along with more parking
Current attractions:
Other attractionsThe mall also includes several "theme areas" including: - Bourbon Street — featuring clubs and restaurants in a New Orleans-influenced setting.
- Europa Boulevard — eclectic shops in an area designed to look like a European streetscape.
- Chinatown — Businesses catering to the Asian population

Smyth, there WAS an ikea in there ... just off of where the rink is, I think there is a sports bar and entertainment place there now.
