Where are the rest of the cuts? You can't tell me that they are still thinking about all of the PTO guys?

Looks like Kulak survives the cuts:

News Update

Darren Haynes @DarrenWHaynes
Well, Brett Kulak is here, just stepped on the ice. That's good news for the Kulak fan club.

Freddie Hamilton is a better option than either IMO
Hamilton and Hathaway are just over a month apart in age. Freddie turns 25 on New Years' Day.

There isn't much upside left in either of them.

Hathaway played alright, but not good enough to force his way into the line-up.

Not sure why people are comparing him to Bollig when it's Freddie that he had to beat out.

It was very clear that Hamilton was ahead on the depth chart based on their pre-season showings. But Hathaway can help our AHL team a ton and is still a 4th line call-up option.

Korpi and Higgins may have survived too:

Derek Wills @Fan960Wills
PTO players Chris Higgins and Lauri Korpikoski are practicing with #Flames today.

That's great... did I say Hamilton was younger with more upside?

No, I said Hamilton is a better option, currently, right now. Regardless of age or upside.

I presume Grossman also has not been let go yet.

I'm gonna trust management/coaches if these guys made the team. They have a history with the players and did a complete evaluation on them through every practice and games. If they feel like we could use them this year I support it. It just seemed to me Higgins had very little gas left in the tank, but again I'm going to put my trust in hockey ops.

Why? There was an open spot for him on the top 6 and did nothing with the opportunity. He is not ready, but he is young and has a lot of time left to get better.

Shinkaruk has the Baertschi flaw... needs to be on one of your top two scoring lines, because they sure aren't going to put him on the shutdown line (Backs/Frolik).

I think Shink going down is actually a very good sign that Gaudreau will be signed soon.

Shinkaruk gone at least guarantees Tkachuk is here to stay? And that they feel Gaudreau will be signed and ready for the opener?

He's waiver exempt for another season and we've got some great talent for Shinkaruk to play with in the AHL. Looked decent, but it's top-6 or nothing with him and it looks like they're leaning towards Ferland.

I agree Hathaway doesn't have much upwards potential. He is a fourth liner / 12/13th forward in every sense. But he is a real fourth liner, where Bollig is a plug. That is evidence just comparing their performance last year, never mind that Hathaway outplayed Bollig in training camp.

Hathaway is a better skater than Bollig.

Hathaway had a +5 Penalty Differential (drew more power plays than he gave to the other team)
Bollig had a -13 Penalty Differential.

Hathaway had a +5.69% 5v5 Relative Scoring Chance For when on the ice.
Bollig had a -16.58% 5v5 Relative Scoring Chance For when on the ice.

Hathaway doubled Bollig in shorthanded ice time in a quarter of the games played.

Hathaway in the AHL is 0.49 PPG
Bollig in the AHL was 0.16 PPG

You really don't need numerical proof though. Just watch them play. The only thing Bollig can do usefully is use his strength along the boards to tip rim-outs to his center, and that's if his center is within eight feet of him. Hathaway has shown a separation gear to drive play as well as a fourth liner can.

Well, Bollig does have a harder shot, but he never gets it off, whereas Hathaway always manages to crash the net and create rebounds like the one that resulted in one of I believe Bennett or Backlund's goals.

The only thing Bollig truly does better (presumably, that is) is fighting.

If we need a good fighter we should just bring back McGrattan from the Nottingham Panthers, he is a better fighter than Bollig. I don't agree with that, but at least then you have a heavyweight other teams fear.
