I was always so-so about Russell. I felt he was targeted unfairly by fans, and was a better defenseman than he was given credit for.
I'd still rather see him sign with someone else though. He doesn't do a lot to help us for that cap hit, and I'd rather not go through another season on this board listening to people gripe about him.

I liked Russel. At $3.1M per though, I like him even more on the Oilers.
That franchise really is the gift that just keeps on giving.

As with the Hall trade, I think this makes the Oilers better. It's an upgrade on D for them. I hate to say it, the Oilers will be better this year.... not playoffs better, but better.

I still really like Russell, though I'm not sure he'll help the Oilers because they probably play him over his ideal usage.
I wonder if those that are happy the Flames aren't signing him will feel the same way after we sign Grossman now instead...

Why all the hate? When Gio got hurt 2 years ago who stepped up and played the most minutes as a pair in the playoffs???? Russell - Wideman did and played awesome! Good for Russell and a great opportunity in Edmonton.

Not going to bash the player, but I am glad we dodged the proverbial bullet if true. Just too much risk bringing him back - if we are trying to be a team that gets the puck up the ice efficiently then we need to take a chance on Brett Kulak. He is the kind of Dman you see filling out the roster on model puck possession teams like Chicago, L.A., Pittsburgh, Nashville, and Carolina*.
*Carolina may have terrible forward talent, but their blue line and style of play are excellent for keeping the play moving up the ice.
