If Shinkaruk even has the chance to fill a top 6 role I'd rather the Flames explore that for a while then simply going the route of tried and tested. As it stands now this franchise has some major holes to fill upfront and Bouma/Stajan are not the answer, nor is pretty much anyone else under contract that I've seen play.

I think it would've been especially bad if it went through - considering that Nill really wanted Gaudreau in the package as well, and Feaster considered it too much payment. And Seguin is a fantastic player, but Monahan + Gaudreau is better.

Porier is only three months younger than Jankowski, two years of pro experience. Like I said, Jankowski did really well for himself, even if his level trailed off as things got more serious. That's how it works with prospects in camp. He'll go down to Stockton and continue to learn, kids a sponge. Jankowski will get his call up at some point, ditto for the rest.

Is there a set criteria for doing incredibly well? I would assume that the Flames were really hoping Jankowski would press for a full time job at this stage of his development. Personally, I expected him to get cut and hopefully have a decent shot at re-joining the team in the new year as an injury replacement or short term band aid.

The beauty of his situation now is that this time next year there won't be any further what if scenarios surrounding Jankowski. Time to go play and earn a spot.

From all reports rumours and the in between since Jankowski signed the Flames wanted/expected him to start in the AHL this year.

AHL to compete with Gillies and McDonald.

One of those three would go to the ECHL.

Sarich and Macoun were at the autograph table in the concourse. Either one of those guys would have looked better on the ice.

Whats the deal with Linden Vey?

He is on a 1 year contract worth 700 000$ and is waiver eligible.

Does he make the team based on his camp?
Does he still have an upside?
Does he clear waivers?
Does anyone care?

Pretty disappointed in Poirier. Had a terrible camp last year and wasn't much better this year. He needs to step it up down in Stockton to get himself back in the conversation and back on the rise. He's heading in the wrong direction, but I really hope he can get it going down there. Maybe I'm being hard on him since he started his pro career so well and since then just hasn't impressed.

Stockton is going to be a fun team to follow this year. Jankowski, Kylington, Gillies, Poirier, Klimchuck, andersson, eat bread and whoever the last few cuts are. Lots of legitimate prospects to follow down there.

The development curve that Jankowski has been on since being drafted is very encouraging. Its slower than some but its steady and steady in the right direction with few, if any, hiccups.

I can see him being a way cheaper version of Backlund in a couple years.

With Agostino, Shore, Elson, and others gone from the Heat... these demotions take on a little bit of a different dimension than if guys were just going to learn the pro game. I would think that Jankowski, Poirier, and Klimchuk are going down to the Heat to all be top 6 forwards. Poirier was already there after a very strong rookie season, but I think we'll see a full season of Jankowski and Klimchuk playing important roles and getting a great chance to show what they are made of.

Frattin will provide veteran scoring, but other than him it seems like the Flames homegrown talent will be expected to carry the team as leaders. Pretty exciting!

I'd have Hathaway on the team for sure. He's the perfect 4th line RW. Big and strong, good skater, gets in on the forecheck, stands up for teammates, hits hard, responsible defensively, plays with intensity.

I see the following spots filled:

Gaudreau-Monahan-?
Ferland-Bennett-Browuer
Bouma-Backlund-Frolik
Stajan-Hamilton-Hathaway
Bollig

Tkachuck back to junior so he doesn't kill himself in the NHL because his body is not physically developed to play his game fully.

The extra RW spot is down to Chiasson, Shinkaruk, Higgins, Korpikoski, Vey.

Higgins, Korpikoski might be better suited on left wing, so if they opt for one of them, then Ferland moves to that top line RW.

I think Shinkaruk will be next to go down, unless he puts up a hat trick in his next game to really get the coaches attention. He needs to score to stick.

In terms of usefulness, I think Higgins and Korpikoski are probably better than Stajan for that 4th line LW spot, but unfortunately, Stajan and his contract are there. So I think both of them will be let go.

As much as he hasn't earned it, that first line RW spot is probably going to go to Chiasson. Winner by default. Hopefully he can improve along the way.

And before the anti-truculent crowd comes in complaining about Bollig as the 13th forward over the other bubble forwards. Think about who you would rather have going off for 5 minutes to fight Lucic in Game 1 of the season. You want Engelland to go off for 5 minutes and screw up your pairings? You want Ferland, Bouma or Hathway to risk getting their face punched in? Lucic will be a bull in a china-shop on his first shift and its' better to have Bollig take him off the ice for 5 then a real player. And no, it's not just for Lucic, there are always guys to fight. Gudbranson in Vancouver, King and Nolan in LA, Nick Ritchie in Anaheim all in our division. You really want any of our "real players" risking injury fighting these guys?
