Starting the season without your leading goal scorer along with your third and fifth leading goal scorers (Backlund, Colborne) will not necessarily mean a significant drop in goals but I would say that it is very likely.
Seems like the mood had shifted from no way Johnny will hold out to Ahh, they will do just fine without him and once he misses a payday or two he will come crawling back. I guess we will see.

There's nothing saying Backlund won't be ready to go for the start of the season, and Brouwer replaces Colborne's scoring.

True that. Nothing saying Johnny won't be signed by Oct 12 either but as of right now the worst case scenario looks pretty bleak.

Come again? I understand that Backlund is currently not cleared to play, but he did practice with the team yesterday, and according to this AM's report with Derek Wills should be ready to go on opening night.

I am still of the opinion that Gaudreau will be in the lineup on opening night, but that does not mean I am so strongly convinced that I do not recognise the possibility that he may hold out for a few games. In the unlikely event that it does happen, I don't believe his absence will set the Flames in such dire straights that they cannot beat the Oilers, Canucks, Coyotes, and Sabres.

Backlund was wearing a no contact jersey two days ago in the live practice video.

Johnny not signing by the start of the season would be bad and the offense would suffer. All I was saying is you can make that point without the exaggerating Backlund / Colborne comments.

I think I will just remind people of what the owners mandated a few seasons ago (I believe it was under Feaster's tenure, IIRC). I think a lot of people missed it, and perhaps this has also been forgotten about. What I do believe is that it has remained unchanged.
Gaudreuvertime has insinuated a few times that Johnny is getting bitter, or has become insulted, or whatever. I think this mandate from the owners probably will go a long way in refuting that:
"Players will be paid fairly and will not be asked or have pressure applied to take discounts. We will pay our players fair market value for their services."
I may have forgotten the exact quote, but the language was fairly close IIRC. The mandate was for the management team not to force players in taking cheap discounts. Now, of course this all comes down to what 'fair market value' is for the Flames and for Gaudreau's camp, but the mandate was not to nickel and dime players and try to force them into taking huge discounts.
I would anticipate that Gaudreau may be a bit frustrated that a deal hasn't been finalized, but I would be of the opinion - considering the above - that he has not been insulted or has some new-found bitterness towards the organization.

Funny how the narrative has slowly changed.
- Both Monahan and Gaudreau will sign together before August, nothing to worry about
- Both Monahan and Gaudreau will sign together before the World Cup, nothing to worry about
- With Monahan's deal done, Johnny will be right behind, nothing to worry about. Definitely not gonna trade him, a deal will get done.
- He'll definitely be signed and at training camp to learn the system
- Ok well he'll be there for sure when the real games matter, he doesn't need time to learn the system
- We'll do just fine without him for a couple of games, it's worth it in the long run
- Let's trade him because he's a small winger. He'll never be Sam Bennett.

Are you seriously suggesting that's the opinion of some kind of majority / collective here?
If so you're pushing being obnoxious to new heights.

No not at all. Like I've always said, it's a vocal minority who have been reassuring everyone that everything is fine and management knows what they are doing. But guess what? It's October tomorrow and they still aren't close.
There are certainly people who have brought up a trade who would have scoffed at the idea of that ever being a consideration a few months ago.

And that somehow translates into "the" narrative?

I know what would make you happy. Gaudreau to New Jersey for Mike Cammalleri and a bag of pucks.

...and as of today, everything seems to be fine and we have reason to believe that management knows what they are doing.

I'll believe it when I see it. Nothing is 'fine' about the current state of affairs. And not many around these parts thought we'd ever get to Oct without Johnny signing. Myself included.
