The IRS gave him the penalty for the illegal donation, so he was taking on the IRS there too wasn't he? The IRS would also be the ones he'd be taking on by saying he didn't violate the rules by buying a 6 foot painting of himself for himself. I don't really see much of a difference between them all, other than maybe degree.
What kind of self respecting artist would make a six-foot painting of Donald Trump? I can't imagine that artist being particularly good, but rather desperate. On the other hand, it could be used in Trump's proposal to torture criminals - 'Tell us everything you know or you're spending the rest of your days watching this guys (pointing to Trump painting) TV shows.'
Things like leveraged donations or downright fraudulent donation receipts, on the other hand? They'll rake you over the coals for that stuff, that's when they put their "we're not screwing around" hat on.
So you're saying the difference in degree is rather large? Fair enough, makes sense.

That was interesting actually, apparently it's a guy who does the paintings right there during the charity night, does a bunch of them in half an hour. So he does the paintings and then they're auctioned off to benefit the charity.

Honest question as I haven't got a ton of background with either the Clinton or the Trump foundation. But is there much of a difference between what Trump is doing and what the Clintons are doing?
Both get massive external donations (foreign in Clinton's case) and don't seemingly do a whole lot of charity work with them.
Clinton's spend all the money on doing good.
