Insurance fraud? Likely no. Unethical? Probably yes.

Most everyone tends to overestimate the value of things they own, so I suspect some people, like myself, are skeptical that the car was worth that much more than insurance was offering. Although I tend to agree that insurance companies are never looking out for your best interest, the fake ads just artificially inflated the value of the car, which I would consider a bit suspect.

So what is everyone's best Kijiji story? Either best find, most ridiculous offer, most interesting buying experience/selling experience, or such?

There has been 2 times now where I actually knew the person responding to my ad.

And one time where I responded to an ad and I knew the seller.

I bought some baby gates earlier in the year and the seller wound up being someone from my grad class in high school. Was cool to catch up.

I bought a pretty sweet record player off of a very nice Hungarian man named Zoltan.

It works well. He was a great guy.

He is attempting (appears to have succeeded) to obtain a benefit/advantage to which he might not be entitled.

It certainly isn't acting in the Utmost Good Faith. Let me put it this way, if the insurance company had a department dedicated to placing false ads to pull down the ACV on vehicles...how would that be viewed?

I might be off base, and it might not be fraud. However, had the insurance company taken the same tact with him I suspect he would have thrown his toys.

From a criminal standpoint, basically all you have to do to get within striking distance is to do something deceitful in order to obtain a monetary benefit.

Well....he is a retired Ironworker who lives in Sundance if that helps any. Nice guy though.

Is that the value that the insurance companies go by? If it's not, then it's a pretty murky area.

The suggestion that putting fake ads on kijiji for cars can lead to a greater insurance settlement for your own car, is amusing.

The suggestion that doing so might constitute fraud under the criminal code, is hilarious.

And that some people believed the story is, well, hysterical.

Tried to buy a stroller off a lady on kijiji. Messaged her in the morning, confirmed she still had it, confirmed I would pay her asking price, and we set up a time to meet at her house in 2 hours - I just needed to go to the bank and get the cash. She gave me her address and everything.

Driving over to her house, about 15 minutes before the scheduled pick-up time, she texted me to say "sorry, I sold it to someone else". What the actual .

LOL. I love Kijiji drama, and I hope I get lowballers on my stuff. It's a free pass to say things to people you never would in real life.

But on the contrary, I also love lowballing people. On dead days at work I troll motorcycle ads looking for decent deals, then offer them half the asking price. I've landed 3 so far this way. It's all in how you phrase the email.

"Hey man, just throwing my hat in the ring. I know your asking $6500 for your Honda ______. But it's out of my budget. If your desperate, or in a hurry, I got $3500 to spend right now, no conditions. If not, good luck man."

Never had a freak out response.

But when I get some illiterate text like "Giv u 10 bux fer PS4. And drop of fer me?"

You're gonna get slaughtered.
