This contract is probably most comparable to Brayden Schenn, who signed for 4 years @ $5.125M

Schenn's contract covered 1 yr of RFA and 3 yrs of UFA. Add a 4th UFA year and the cap hit is probably in the upper 5s.

Huberdeau is younger and has better numbers

This does not have a lot of comparable for Gaudreau. Gaudreau is a bit better... that bit is significant.

It does however show that the Flames are way over spending on journey-men players.

1 year of RFA (with arbitration open to Hurbedeau) and 5 UFA years of Hurbedeau at 5.9M and the Flames are paying Frolik 4.3x5 and Brouwer 4.5x4 for past their peak UFA years??!!

While his star does not have the same brightness as Gaudreau over the last 2 year he has been pretty equivalent to Monahan.

Monahan .77 ppg +2 and Hurbedeau .73 pp and +28

Monahan just signed his 7 year deal 4 RFA years and 3 UFA years 6.375.

It just seems that the Flames have to match the top of the market deals to get people signed.... Very hard to get a winning team in place using that strategy.

The only contracts that the Flames have where the players are likely to out perform their contracts are Brodie and Elliot .... Elliot signed by another organization.

While UFA years are not generally a player's peak-playing years they are universally more expensive. This is why it makes no sense to compare players as you persistently do on the basis of the difference between RFA and UFA contracts.

Huberdeau scored 24 goals and 82 points combined in his 21- and 22-year-old seasons, and last year scored 20 goals and 59 points. He has played in 6 playoff games and scored 1 goals and 2 assists.

Sean Monahan scored 58 goals and 125 points combined in his 21- and 22-year-old seasons, and has outperformed Huberdeau at a younger age in virtually every year he has played in the NHL. He has played in 11 playoff games and scored 3 goals and 3 assists.

Jonathan Huberdeau is not a very close comparable to Sean Monahan, who is indisputably a much better player.

We haven't seen Brouwer play a game yet, so it's hard to judge that one, but Frolik is worth every penny of his contract.

Huberdeau's contract was 2 year RFA and 4 UFA years.

Huberdeau put up 54 points and signed a bridge contract averaging 3.25M a year. He now put up 59 points (in 3 less games) but did benefit from a solid year from Barkov. Arguably he didn't make that significant next step to warrant too much of a raise for his RFA years, but assuming he's improved to 4M say, that still means the UFA years were "valued" at nearly 7M. Even valuing his RFA years at 4.5M, his UFA years are still over 6.5M

4M, 4M, 6.85M, 6.85M, 6.85M, 6.85M = 5.9M/year

He's no longer comparable to Frolik and Brouwer. And while obviously Florida is banking on him improving, he still only has a career year of 20 goals and less than 60 points.

If you actually wanted to compare Frolik and Brouwer to comparable players, not 23 year old RFA's, here's some recent contracts for forwards between 4-5M:
Abedelkader - 4.25M (7 years), took effect after 42 point season.
Anisimov - 4.55M (5 years), took effect after 42 point season.
Stafford - 4.35M (2 years), took effect after 43 point season.
Soderberg - 4.75M (5 years), took effect after 44 point season.
Zuccarello - 4.5M (4 years), took effect after 49 point season.
Macarthur - 4.65M (5 years), took effect after 36 point season (pro-rated to 47).
Perreault - 4.125M (4 years), signed after 41 point season (contract not yet in effect).
Killorn - 4.45, 40 point
Kreider - 4.63, 43 point
Johansson - 4.58, 46 point
Boedker - 4, 51 point
Lehtera - 4.7, 34 point
Sutter - 4.375, 33 point (signed before 2015-2016 season started).

It's pretty obvious that ~40 point players are being evaluated between 4M and 5M. Frolik signed his contract after a 42 point season and Brouwer signed his after a 39 point season.
