Default Florida close to signing Huberdeau to a 6-year, ~$6MM AAV contract

@TSNBobMcKenzie
FLA closing in on six-yr extension with Jonathan Huberdeau. Not a done deal yet but getting there. AAV likely to be a shade under $6M.

Makes me cringe at the impact this might have on Gaudreau's contract.

Why? A player who isn't as good signing for less than Sean Monahan has no impact on Gaudreau.

Why would this have any impact on Gaudreau's contract? Huberdeau isn't on the same level as Gaudreau.

And? Johnny will likely get well over $7 million, regardless. This has no impact on his contract.

Both are 23 year old left shooting left wingers. Yes, Gaudreau is significantly better than Huberdeau, but a $6 million AAV seems like a lot to me for a player who has never broken 60 points. And we want Gaudreau on a longer contract. It's just another proverbial contract of reference.

But Scorpion has spoken. Close it up.

I like it. Florida's locking down a core that should be a perennial playoff team for years to come. Good players with some solid cost-certainty. It's hard to say if they'll have a shot at a cup with these players, but those answers will come in time.

Still need an answer in net long term though. Not one goalie prospect worth anything in the system. Flames might be an ideal trading partner at some point with 3-4 quality goalie prospects in the pipe.

Very different deals though.

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong here, but 6yr deals for each player will buy...

Huberdeau
2 x RFA
4 x UFA

Gaudreau
5 x RFA
1 x UFA

Considering the above, Huberdeau's contract should look inflated versus Gaudreau's, should Johnny also sign a 6yr. Florida is having to buy expensive UFA years for the majority of the contract, whereas Calgary would only be paying UFA dollars on the last year.

This 1000 times this. If Johnny wants the money he needs to max out the term because Calgary needs to buy UFA years to justify the huge cap hit. To me the deal is less than 4 years or full 8

That's a fair assessment, but to definitively say that this has absolutely no impact on Gaudreau's negotiations is absurd. I never mentioned this is a perfect comparable... it was just a one sentence comment that this might impact Gaudreau's situation.

I didn't definitively say that this deal has no impact on Gaudreau's negotiations.

If we wanted to relate these deals somehow, one could argue that each of Gaudreau's RFA/UFA years are worth $2.000 AAV more than Huberdeau's. I think that'd be pretty fair.

It'd break down the contracts like:

Huberdeau
4.600 (RFA)
4.600 (RFA)
6.600 (UFA)
6.600 (UFA)
6.600 (UFA)
6.600 (UFA)
= 6yrs @ 5.933 AAV

Gaudreau
6.600 (RFA)
6.600 (RFA)
6.600 (RFA)
6.600 (RFA)
6.600 (RFA)
8.600 (UFA)
= 6yrs @ 6.933 AAV

By definition there's no way to argue that! It might, it might not!

Personally I don't think it impacts it at all.

I just don't see how this contradicts anything I've said.

I know you didn't say this has no impact on Gaudreau's negotiation, but the first 2 posts in this thread did. That's all I meant.

I think that's a pretty good way to look at it, and then if they were to sign on for years 7 and 8, those additional years would be potentially impacted by inflation (something like 9.0M and 9.5M for year 7 and 8), which would put his 8 year AAV at around 7.5M.

I think you are right in that this new data point is yet another factor in the Gaudreau valuation.

Not a bad deal for a guy who has cracked 59 points. Probably would have been 6 million flat if he had broken 60 points.
