Whether their lives are ruined really depends on them from this point forward imho and should not be a concern to society at large.
What should concern the rest of us is whether they are a risk to re-offend, and whether their sentences are appropriate, given their crimes. On the face of it, I consider three years a light sentence, but I expect the judge will have found mitigating factors i.e.: no prior convictions etc.

Family destroyed. Children alienated. Jobs lost. Criminal record. Jail time. Everyone they know probably turning their backs on them.

I don't know these people but I will go out on a limb and say yeah, pretty much ruined.

Less concerned about the punishment aspect, more concerned about people who have proven they cannot be trusted to make reasonable decisions and are clearly threats to others and the rest if society being turned loose to make more bad decisions and potentially cost innocent people their lives.

People do return from prison and have productive lives.
Again, my point is, whether or not their lives are "ruined" or "destroyed" from this point going forward is no one's concern or responsibility--or choice--but their own. They made their own beds, so boo hoo.
