Default The Hockey News 2016-17 Yearbook

For some reason I always eagerly anticipate the arrival of THN's annual Yearbook. It's well written, and breaks each team down impressively. I wonder when the release date is for this issue. I can't seem to find anything on the next. I am guessing early September?

Got both.

The funniest part of the yearbook is where the author of the Canucks preview cites injuries as the main reason for the Canucks' bad season, and sniffs that the reason the Canucks aren't rebuilding is because the market wouldn't tolerate it. Came across as even more deluded than the stuff Oilers' beat writers spin out every year.

It seem that the Hockey News has come to the same opinion that I hold on the Flames. In the analysis of the Flames Defense :

Quote:
As much as the goalies were deservedly panned for the team's dismal goals-against average, the play in front of them was just as abysmal. High-quality scoring chances were surrendered by the boatload, something Gulutzan will address.
and

Quote:
The stars up front especially must improve their defensive play

not sure if it's the same magazine or not, but the one I got they do not predict Calgary going far this year. VAN then CGY are at the bottom and they yet again predict Edmonton in the playoffs (wildcard)

Got mine in the mail about 2 weeks ago. It looks like Habs only Canadian team projected to make the playoffs. Flames are picked to just miss.

No, not this one. THN has Calgary well ahead of EDM and VAN, and all missing the playoffs.

It's a fair cop. Last season, Elliot played behind the team with the best and most thoroughly implemented defensive system in the league. This season, he'll be playing behind a team that had one of the worst.

Gulutzan and Elliot were the two biggest pickups of the offseason. But the success of both will depend on how easily the rest of the team learns and buys into a new system.

It is fair, but the poor play of especially Hiller last season cannot be understated, which is exactly what the quote in ricardodw's post attempts to do. I remember seeing a breakdown from last year that showed Hiller's high-danger area save percentage fairly close to average, but his medium- and low-danger area SPs were both astonishingly low. Sure, the Flames need to play better in the defensive zone, but goaltending was shockingly bad last year.
