I think that ATC is some countries always makes mention of the "confirm gear down" in their landing clearance call to all flights, so I wouldn't read into that too much.

Gotcha. I guess the number one question at this point is why they selected gear up before coming confirming positive rate.

ATC in Canada used to state "check gear down" when giving landing clearance but it has been many years (I'm thinking early to mid 90's) since it ceased for liability reasons. ATC shouldn't have to remind crews to put the gear down.
This incident has early indications of a masterfully bungled approach/go-around that endangered many lives and wrecked a perfectly good 777.
Not related to this incident but the initial report of the Flydubai 737-800 crash in Rostov-on-Don in March was just released and is quite damning of the poor decisions and airmanship of the crew which led to the demise of all on board.

It looks like they came to a stop pretty close to the end of the runway; I wonder if they had trouble climbing (for whatever reason) and concluded that since they were virtually out of runway anyhow, they might as well try reducing drag to assist the climb?
Oops...you mean landing-gear doors are high-drag?

Hopefully not. The SFO Asiana accident personified poor airmanship/judgement/competency by all 3 crew members. At this point, we can only speculate on this incident but there are some early clues that point to the people side of things and not the aircraft. Based on the metar at the time of the incident there was wind shear reported at OMBD along with blowing dust which may have been the catalyst for the attempted go around. The 777 has a gust inhibitor built into the auto throttle and if engaged would offer protection by instantaneously adjusting power to compensate for shear. Will be interesting to see if the auto throttle was turned off. Will also be interesting to see what role, if any, wind shear played into things.

From a passenger experience perspective they were not loved, but I always enjoyed seeing the Mad Dogs coming through YYC.

I never minded them, the 2x3 seating meant that many fewer middle seats to worry about. I also got my one and only Upgrade to business on one of these so that's another favorable memory for me.
