Ok so I've started to browse for steel wheels along with tires and I'm getting a bit confused. My old car had on rim winter tires and it seemed quicker and cheaper to get them put on in the winter. Storage isn't a big issue so I don't care about the extra space that having on rims may require.

My model of car only has one trim so finding the right tire size appears to be easy. 225/45R18.

However when I look for steel rims, it says that I can do anything from 16" to 18" (based on looking up my year/make/model in the costco pdf) . Doesn't the 18 in my tire size mean I need 18" wheels?

Can someone explain? I've tried googling it but I'm just not getting it.

Disregard this post before the edit. If you get a smaller rim, you will need a different size of tire.

The OE is 18", but you can go up or down a size. For winter driving, it's not a bad idea to go down to 16". It's cheaper, and a smaller tire generally means a narrower tire, which is better for winter driving.

Usually you can go down a size or two without any problems. You just have to keep your overall circumference about the same +/-3% (ideally within 1% though.) The biggest concern with going down a size is to make sure that the smaller diameter wheels fit over the brake calipers. Also, when selecting new wheels you want to make sure that you have the proper offset so that you don't run into any rubbing on the inside of the fenders.

What vehicle is this for?

Ok so let's assume I went to a 17, would I then buy 225/45R17 tires and 17 inch rims? Because they have to match?

Nope. The diameter would be off, so your speedometer and odometer would be wrong. You can find tire size converters all over the place but I believe the tire size you'd want to put on a 17 inch rim would be 255/45/r17.

You also need to know the correct offset and depth of the wheel if you're getting an aftermarket wheel, to make sure it'll actually fit on your car. If your current wheel is 18x7.5 and you get something that's 18x9 it might not work, or you might need spacers or additional messing around to make them fit.

Also note that the bolt pattern on any new wheel needs to fit 5x4.5 bolts (I'm pretty sure Scion uses the same bolt pattern as Toyota / Lexus / most Japanese cars)

If you used a 17 inch rim you obviously get a 17 inch tire but you want to size it differently so that you can match the circumference of the originals.

Input your original size and select the wheel size you want (in this case 17.) To match a 225/45R18 you would want a 225/50R17.

I run studded Hankook iPike's on my armada and they're great. I've never run non-studded on it before though so i can't say how much better it is or not.

Costco membership is needed for tires. The only place you don't need a membership is the pharmacy and liquor store.

Costco's announced their winter tire deals in the latest edition of their Connection magazine. I don't have my copy of the magazine in front of me, but it looks like it'll be $70-$80 off of Pirelli, Bridgestone, and Michelin in Sept - Oct.

Hmm. Weird. Their online store let me set up an account and get all the way to the payment screen but I didn't proceed. Even there the costco member number isn't required, but there is a space for it.

You are right. Online purchases don't require a membership. I don't know how they handle installation in those cases though. When you order online is it just the tire cost or do they also include the $15 per wheel installation and mounting fee?

Last time I bought at Costco online I was emailed when the tires were in. At that time I was given an opportunity to book installation. At no time was I asked for my membership.
