Wanted to share this great website I came across. Some guy has compiled/written a massive amount of information about the Hip, all their songs, what all the songs mean, what various lyrics mean and more. Apparently his original plan was to write a book, but when that failed he just made a website. Yes, it looks like a 1998 geocities website, but if you can get past that the content is absolutely fantastic.
It's on vimeo. just go there and search for tragically hip
Thanks for this. I knew I'd be able to find it sooner or later. Was only able to listen to it on CBC radio as we were out at the lake, but watched it today and wow, got about a minute in before tears welled up!

I sent him an email saying great work and that if he ever gets the book idea going again I'd pay over $100 for a nicely done coffee table book. Talk about a great Christmas gift for about 5 million Canadians.
As for the lyrics issue, it's probably a combination of things. Big catalogue, varied setlist across the country, long shows, very active stage presence, and terminally ill. Frankly I'd be confused if he wasn't using lyric monitors.
He's always had issues with lyrics. As noted in the MuchMusic special he specifically says "I have a problem with remembering lyrics" and that was back in 2000.
Here's him in 1999 blowing the first verse of Nautical Disaster (a song they play almost every single show):
I think it's related to his condition only in the sense that they probably had much less rehearsal time than normal (or next to none?) for obvious reasons. Also, I found it interesting that he didn't play the guitar for any song, including the ones that he would almost always have one like Bobcaygeon or Gift Shop.
But he's been using prompters for 4-5 years, I believe.

Yes we have our differences in this country. But that video makes me really damn proud to be Canadian.
People coast to coast signing the same song, at the same time. Yep. Awesome.

That's surprisingly not an overly popular Hip song. Some sing along for sure, but not a huge number.
I'm one of those guys that was always a huge Hip fan, but I never really appreciated them the way I am these days. So I missed out on some of the so called deep tracks in their catalogue, and I would include Scared in that list. I used to listen to them more for their music than their lyrics, so I think I avoided some of the songs that initially didn't grab me. Scared never really grabbed me. Of course, now I love it and wish I had been a more faithful listener over the years.

Following the end of the Tragically Hip's highly celebrated Canadian tour, with the final show broadcasted live on CBC and CBC Music on Aug. 20 to 11.7 million viewers, all 17 albums by the band have landed on the Canadian Billboard chart.
Beginning with the Hip's debut EP to its latest album, Man Machine Poem, each album has placed on the Canadian Albums chart, including 2005's Yer Favourites, which is currently at number 1, beating out R&B star Frank Ocean's newest album, Blonde. Last week, Yer Favourites charted at number 2, and according to CBC News, "saw its total consumption rise 238 per cent."
Rounding out the top 10 are Man Machine Poem (number 6), 1992's Fully Completely (number 8) and 1989's Up To Here ( number 9). Even live concert recordings charted.
11.7 million viewers is 1/3 of the entire population of Canada. Stunning.

Here's a classic Gord moment, the killerwhaletank.
Way back when, CFNY in Toronto would play this version every so often. Usually late at night. I remember recording it on a cassette just so I could listen to it over and over.
Why does it seem like such a chore to get Gord Downie the order of Canada? Of all the actors and people who have received them it seemed like a sure thing even before the cancer.
Now it should be automatic, but everything went silent after the petition.
