Just how I see it. I could see Hamilton climbing up the list this year though. Not sure where Brouwer factors in but he's probably solidly in that third tier.
I know it's fashionable for flames fans to think Brodie is the teams best player, but again he might not even be the best defenseman on his team. He might not even be a top 10 defenseman in the league. He hasn't made an Olympic or World Cup team. Alone, in the view of team canada decision makers, there are at least 7 Canadian defenseman who are better. Factor in all the other countries and there you have it.

At the end of their careers how many olmpics/world cups do you see Brodie & gaudreau playing in?

0/1 to 3/4 (for Jonny)?

Brodie is criminally underrated around the league which Flames fans are okay with. The people who watch him play regularly consider him a top-10 defenseman in the NHL.

I'd like to have a poll to see what percent of Flames fans would consider Brodie a better all round player than Giordano. My guess would be ~80% in favor of Brodie.

I guess I'm in the 20 percent camp. Luv Brodie but Gio is a step above especially when he plays his game. Hard nosed, can make the big hit, plays tough let alone his offensive flair. Brodie juat keeps getting better and allows Gio to play his game vs over compensating.

I hate to be that guy, but I am starting to freak out a little with Gaudreau not signed yet. I am having flashbacks to the Iginla hold out.

So it's Brodie that "allows Gio to play his game", and it's playing said game that makes Gio better?

Brodie is the new breed of dman, if Gulutzan lets him free he'll be a smaller Brent Burns. Brodie has elite vision, skating, hockey IQ, passing and an above average shot.

Just watch what happens with a coach willing to give the boys slack, Brodie will show just how much better he is. We saw Brodie excelling under a very strict coach, with a very dynamic and adaptive play style. Just you wait and see this season what a free and unhampered Brodie will do.

Are you also flashing back to Iginla staying a Flame until 2013?

I see Brodie playing in at least the next two best on best tournaments, four on the high end.

Johnny will be probably get into four with a shot at five.

World Cup training camps start two weeks from today. Johnny's agent can say what he wants, but I'm sure they all want to get this done before that.

I expect we'll see another press conference before the end of the week.

Going back to the original argument, Gaudreau would be more difficult to replace. Brodie is a top pairing d on every team in the league (off the top of my head) but he's not a true No1. He's not Aaron Ekblad, Alex Pietroangelo, Drew Doighty or Erik Karlson. He's Ducan Keith light.

Gaudreau looks to be an elite scoring forward for the next decade. If the flames nickel & dime him, he might not forget about it come next contract. I'm sure he he likes Calgary, but I'm fairly sure would have no problem going closer to home.
You are welcome to your opinion, but frankly, I don't think you know what you're talking about with respect to Brodie.

He is not 'one of the top 5 players on this team', he is one of the top 2 (along with Gaudreau).

I am as big of a Giordano fan as anyone - have been from day 1 - but Brodie is now the better player, (considering only what happens on the ice).

As to your comparisons, Pietrangelo has the pedigree and track record, but Brodie has been a better player for the last couple years. He is more than 'Duncan Keith light' and if he were on the Blackhawks in Keith's place, he would probably be considered one of the top 3 to 5 defensemen in the league.

Brodie is criminally under-rated and will continue to be until the Flames can generate some significant playoff time and success.

Anyway, enough of the derail - let's get it back on track.

He was actually easily better than Pietrangelo/Ekblad last year, if you bother to look past narratives (Ekblad btw was not even consistently the clear best blueliner on his pairing, Campbell played a huge part in Ekblad's success, never mind him being a true #1). Pietrangelo too is inferior, albeit less so. Playing on a better team does not make you better individually.

We'll agree he's not Erik Karlsson offensively but I would say he is better purely defensively. No one in the NHL is Erik Karlsson offensively though.

He actually outproduced Doughty while playing with worse forwards, against better competition in a more defensive role with significantly less power play time. The only thing Doughty's "Norris" season wins out in health, as Brodie missed a handful of games. I am a huge Doughty fan and I know as well as anyone that he is a better game-impacter than his stats might show but I also know you can't overrate intangibles to the extent of making false statements. Even Doughty got humiliated pretty hard in the first round of the playoffs defensively - because no individual skater's two-way game alone is going to be flawless in the modern NHL not even Doughty, Chara, Lidstrom, or Keith. Once you get to a certain level defensively (Doughty might be a hair ahead of Brodie due to physicality) you need to cover that impact offensively (which Brodie does moreso. Don't be mislead by power play points). I give Doughty the edge in the comparision only because he has proven more with his two rings, not because TJ Brodie is not at a comparable level.

I agree, Brodie is Duncan Keith-lite. Or perhaps more accurately at 25 he was possibly indistinguishable from Duncan Keith at age 25. Duncan Keith currently btw may be the best all around defenseman in the world right now so that's hardly a criticism.

TJ Brodie is not only a "True" #1 but he is elite among "True" #1s.

Yeah, I think it's a safe bet this gets done before then.

Monahan's deal isn't a blueprint for Gaudreau's (they won't be the same), but it does dictate the ballpark that Johnny's deal will be in.

I just can't think that there's some Gio cap. It seems like something Giordano himself would think is ridiculous. And Burke as well. He is the captain, but he is not the teams best player. And that's OK. But your best player should be your highest paid player, period.

Still way to early IMO to worry. If labour day rolls by then I would be concerned. They are talking everyday and that will only intensify as we draw closer to the world cup.

If that's your concern, keep in mind that after Iginla held out, he went on to play another (almost) 13 seasons with the Flames and set virtually every team career record in the process.

Would we be debating about Gio/Brodie if we had taken Maata in 2012?

I'm not implying that there would be a long term strain in the relationship, but there is a fine line between making the playoffs and being out. Back when Iginla held out, it very likely may have cost us a few points in the standings. Maybe not a difference maker then, but I could see it being one now. If Gaudreau misses camp or a few games, it could put the season on the line. Things are that tight.

That's right, the sky is falling!! Ok, I am not there yet, but just a little antsy that's all.

In a thread about Gaudreau at that.
