Didn't see this posted.
Really fun read, an inside look of the aftermath of a trade, about arguably one of this forum's favorite targets.

Chris Simon used spray painted Rangers gloves when the Flames acquired him in 2004. They were stiff and crunchy. I bet they felt extra special on face washes too.

a true out-of-nowhere trade involving a marquee player and a division rival. But as hockey’s chattering classes were losing their minds over the deal with the Maple Leafs

This makes it sound like years later we'll ask each other , "Where were you when you first heard about 'The Trade'?"

I really wish you could read an article on Sportsnet or TSN without the stupid autoplay videos.

They actually changed it I think, it's not autoplaying for me on SN anymore.

I was in Vegas when Phaneuf was traded out of Calgary. I had a holy ####! Moment for about 15 seconds.....and went back to bed.
Pretty sure it was around 3pm.

I bought a pair of Bryan Marchment's gloves from the Flames used equipment sale way back when. They had teal accents around the "Easton" word mark that too were hastily painted/markered over in black for the most part.
He would've had those gloves from SJ 2 years (at least) earlier. He played for the Avs and Leafs (who don't have had black gloves) after SJ and before Calgary. Maybe a backup pair for here, but they were certainly used by him as a Flame for a period of time.
Gus Thorson was there too at that sale and told me that Darryl was very particular about players making sure they didn't have "frankenstien" looking equipment like that, so the equipment guys had to make sure that there was no teal showing/ordered him new gloves, and, that also included goalies. Recall Kipper had the plain white mask for his first two weeks in late 2003 when he came here, but Darryl made sure that he had a mask coming ASAP that was either red or black or personalized.

Speaking of Frankenstein equipment, remember when Osgood got traded from the Red Wings to the Islanders and kept wearing his Detroit pants for a short while? I never understood how the league or Islanders let him do that, it looked like my beer league team.

I don't know about the modern day but at the time that photo was taken, goalie equipment would have been much more difficult to break in to game shape.
Most goalies wouldn't feel comfortable throwing on a brand new set of Vaughns with zero notice. Even today.
