Mid-Sized SUV Buying Advice
My fiance is looking to replace her aging truck with a slightly newer mid-sized SUV. I'm mining the CP hive-mind looking for recommendations/personal experience for mid-sized SUVs around 2008-2010.

I have a 2009 Ford Explorer (not sure if this is mid size or not), but I have enjoyed having it and it has been a good vehicle for me

Cool, no complaints with the Explorer? It seems like there are a lot of Explorers in her price-point, with reasonable mileage.
How is the drive?

Those are crossovers. The Murano and Rav4 anyway.

Rav 4 & Escape are Compact SUV's.
Murano is a mid-size crossover.
What's her budget? What features are most desired?
Coming from a truck? towing ability? All Wheel Drive?

I'm not really worried about classifications.
Basically, SUV/crossovers that aren't the size of a suburban.
Looking around $8000-10000, needs AWD or 4x4.
No need to have towing.

I find it drives ok. Unfortunately I don't have more insight for you as my previous vehicle was a 1996 explorer, and I did not test drive a bunch of vehicles when I bought the 2009.
I would buy another explorer in a heartbeat.

I have a Rav4 and love it. If you get an older model (before 2013) you can get the ones with the bigger engine. Mine has a V6 and it has power but also gets good gas mileage

Green Lantern's advice is a bit generic. For example VW is rated worse than Buick and Fiat (Axis power!) is the worst manufacturer rated:
With that said, the best used 2 row SUVs per Consumer Reports are:
- Acura RDX
- Honda Crosstour
- Honda CRV
- Lexus RX
- Mazda CX-5
- Nissan Murano
- Subaru XV
- Toyota RAV4
Personally, I'd recommend the CX-5 for her. If that's too much then a more used CRV or RAV4 is likely the safest bet.

buying used I'd buy domestic. So much more bang for your buck. Resale value from new plummets as people still believe that reliability of domestics is worse than there counterparts.
Buying new that future resale value reduces some of the depreciation loss you take but used you want to take advantage of it.
If she previously drove a truck with a V6 or V8 engine I would be thoroughly testing if the small 4 cylinder crossovers had enough power and low end tourque for her driving style. Depending on year and engine they can be quite under powered (ie 4cyl Dodge Journey or CRV)
