Challenger in '86 for me for sure. I was 4 going on 5 at the time. Didn't really understand why my mom was watching so intently but I distinctly remember watching the video and seeing the Y shape of the explosion. Stupid faulty O ring...

Some good ones in here.

Definitely Mt St Helens for me, as well as the Falklands War. I couldn't figure out why GB was fighting with anyone that far south. It also introduced me to the Hawker Harrier, which I thought was just about the coolest thing on the planet.

The Columbine Shooting. I remember the Gulf War a little bit, same with the conflict in the former Yugoslavia, but Columbine was where I lost that childhood glow, and realized that the world could - and often was - a filthy awful place.

OJ Simpson getting chased in the white Bronco. I didn't know who OJ Simpson was or understand the significance of the event but I remember that day vividly.

We didn't have a TV until the late 70s, my dad was uber religious and thought they were bad bad bad but eventually caved. So probably the first "big" news I remember hearing about but didn't see play out on TV was Elvis' death. For a very religious guy like my dad, he sure talked about that a lot.

The next one was the Tehran hostage crisis. Followed that very closely. Then Mt St Helens - before we moved to Canada, we lived in a few places affected by the eruption - Slide Creek, Abernathy, Longview, Kalama. So that had some impact on my folks, more than me, but the story had an impact. Oh, and the the Pope John Paul II assassination attempt because it happened on my birthday.

I had been thinking about getting back into journalism at the time, and the fact I didn't really give a crap that Diana was dead and didn't see why it needed an 'all hands on deck' level of local coverage proved that it just wasn't the field for me.

1988 movie, The Naked Gun - Nordberg was played by OJ Simpson.

Mt St Helens- I remember the ash falling.

Also John Lennon's death. Was playing in one of my dad's trucks and managed to turn the radio on. The dj sounded so sad when he announced that John had been shot, it really stuck with me.

You poor, poor man. Never experienced Leslie Nelson at his Frank Drebin best? You just haven't lived.

Probably a wise choice. One of the friends is now a reporter at Global in Calgary and seems to be doing ok but she struggled for years after leaving that small town. Not much or a "profession" now in my mind anyways. I was a techy so the news had no real impact on me either. More beer and dogs for this guy!

Unthinkable. Un-Canadian... Simply shocking.
