Icon45 Leafs trade Bernier to Ducks for a conditional pick

Chris Johnston @reporterchris
The #leafs have traded Jonathan Bernier to Anaheim for a conditional 2017 draft pick.

Bernier looked decent down the stretch. Good pickup for Anaheim.

Does Anaheim have the cap space to add him?

Was wondering when the Ducks were going to get a more experienced back up.

All they have in their system is Matt Hackett and Dustin Tokarski, who are both pretty terrible, and I didn't see them leaving their starting duties to a 22 year old Gibson and his 66 games of NHL experience.

Yes after adding him they have roughly $10 million in cap space with Rackel and Lindholm left to sign.

Chris Johnston @reporterchris
The #leafs paid Jonathan Bernier a $2M signing bonus on July 1, so the #ducks are only on the hook for $2.15M in actual salary this season.

Budget Ducks do it again.

They pretty much had to, I thought Leafs were in cap troubles with all the bad contracts they took on to get draft picks. This probably frees up the money needed to ink Matthews and all his bonuses.

Who's left looking without a backup and could give an opportunity to Ramo or Ortio?

-Toronto
-San Jose
-Nashville

It'd be hilarious if Bernier outplays Andersson next season.

So will the Leafs use Sparks as back up, or will they go out and sign Enroth now?

The UFA goalie pool is pretty slim pickings now. After Enroth it's just Scrivens, and then Ramo and Ortio with the most NHL games last season.

EDIT: Lindback also, but not a good goalie.

Anaheims defense vs Torontos defense ... for sure he'll outplay Andersen.

Bernier has been the better goalie for most of the past three seasons other than half of last season.

I'm not a big fan of Bernier but that seems like a really cheap offer. I'm assuming that most likely the trade is for a second rounder (maybe first if the Ducks go to the Stanley Cup finals or something like that.)

I hadn't realized that. Is Anaheim that good at managing the cap, or just lucky? I don't recall them being much of a UFA player which doesn't seem to have hurt their competitiveness.
