The Next Ones (THW) 2017 NHL Draft HQ
Goodbye Buffalo. Hello Chicago.
Maybe it's too soon for some, but never too early to look ahead to the next wave. Thought I'd kick off 2017 NHL Draft talk (if no one else has).
2017 NHL Draft Rankings: The Next Ones Preliminary Edition
The Early Fab Five
Quote:
Nolan Patrick leads the way as a potential franchise centreman. Sublime puckmoving blueliner Timothy Liljegren is nipping at his heels. Kailor Yamamoto is somewhat undersized, but compensates with dynamic offensive skills, impressive instincts, and game-changing ability. Gabriel Vilardi is another stud centre with immense potential. Nico Hischier will make a push to be the highest Swiss player drafted ever.

What the heck...I know, I know...way too early, but #NeverTooEarly at the same time...
Don't shoot the messenger as to where Flames pick.
Look at Las Vegas making an entry draft selection!
Go ahead, mock my mock...

what a great class when it comes to Scandinavian hockey names. Liljegren, Vesalainen, Vaakanainen, Boqvist, Kotkansalo. Awesome.

I thought the same thing devo22 - some great names in general, but especially the Scandanavian kids.

This bunch seems a lot smaller with a ton of sub-6' players ranked high.

2016 NHL Draft Team Grades and Top 15 Prospects (for each team):
- Metropolitan & Atlantic Divisions completed
- Central almost done
- Pacific under construction!
Maybe a little late to the party as far as 2016 NHL Draft team grades go, but worth the wait. E-Mac goes through each team's draft and grades it. He also has created a quintessential prospects resource highlighting top prospects for each team, a separate tab/worksheet for each team.
As well, he has the complete draft results by pick and by team and compares this to his rankings, my The Next Ones rankings as well as NHL Central Scouting's (combined) rankings.
Prepare to dive in and play around with this resource.
Oh yeah, it's downloadable as well!
LINK - Atlantic Division
UPDATE:
Metropolitan Division now completed - LINK
Should note that the massive spreadsheet in the article(s) contain:
- Top 15 prospects for each team
- 2016 draft picks
- U21 roster players
- stats for all these lads
- separate tab for each division (those completed so far), for each team, for the draft by order in which they were drafted
Any omissions in the Top 15s?
Would you order them differently?
PS: Disclaimer: E-Mac nor I responsible for time spent on reading these articles ; )

2016 NHL Draft Rankings: Top 60 Prospects for Fantasy Hockey
Until we get some more 2017 content...for fantasy hockey junkies!
Usually do this before the draft, but decided to wait til the offseason this time around. This is admittedly having some fun with the rankings, but intriguing to look at it with this gameful mindset.
Tkachuk did drop slightly compared to draft position but could have just as easily been placed at 4th as the guys were pretty tight.
4 of 2016 Flames picks did land in top 51, for what it's worth!
Quote:
Hand-crafted specially for fantasy hockey junkies, although certainly not exclusive to.
The following rankings are based on a prospect’s pure offensive potential. Goalies get no love here. Apologies to the vital guardians of the goal, but your potential is just too monumentally difficult to predict from a fantasy armchair GM’s point of view.
You will quickly notice some of the undersized forwards and blueliners creep up the rankings in comparison with my Final Rankings. I have attempted to implement a healthy dose of realism as, as by strict use of my own definition, some of these diminutive players would have ranked even higher. Also, I have taken into account that because of some prospects‘ solid all-around ability, they may get more ice time, which may in turn translate in offensive output. Those who are hooked on hockey simulator-based leagues where defensive traits and goalie prospects are more valuable, you want to pay more attention to my regular draft rankings.

Here's the Top 5:
(apologies - formatting doesn't play nice)
Rank Name Team Pick CR Ht Pos Prospect Profiler Notes
1 Matthews, Auston TOR 1 1 6’2 C
Auston “Powers” is a franchise centre; American version of Toews
2 Laine, Patrik WPG 2 2 6’4 RW
Gifted Finnish Finisher; high end sniper
3 Puljujarvi, Jesse EDM 4 3 6’4 RW
The Finnish Ultimate Weapon; Finnish version of Mats Sundin
4 Jost, Tyson COL 10 5 5’11 C/RW
Possesses tremendous speed, vision and hockey IQ; WJAC MVP, U18s Top Forward
5 Nylander, Alexander BUF 8 7 6’1 RW Alexander Maximiliam Michael Junior Nylander Altelius: offensive catalyst

Shouldn't it be a top 62? It seems strange to leave off one pick.
Or have the Oilers finally had their 1st round pick taken away from them? Yeah that's it isn't it? Finally! I approve! Top 61 it is.

Well in, N26!
Yeah, after publishing, realized I should have probably done Top 62. Thanks for noticing! ; )
I went with 61 at the time since that was the # of picks in 1st two rnds this year.
If any other compensation picks crop up, I guess it could be >62 as well.

There likely won't be any compensatory picks this year. The only unsigned 2015 firsts are collegiate or European players.

Now this is going to feel like I'm closely watching everything you put out there and looking for mistakes. I'm not it is just a coincedence I've noticed two things recently.
In your Central division Dallas section you have Brett Pollock as their #10 prospect in the system.
I really like your draft spreadsheets and look forward to them.

UPDATE: It will be a go - he's had it done for about a month, but life got busy for him over the summer. Just working on final touches.
