When I read these posts about people saying their union isn't letting it's members vote on deals the first question that comes to my mind is: what are you doing about that? The members call the shots, not their business agents or president. Unless you have given them the authority to decide what offers you are allowed to vote on, in which case if it is not working to the members satisfaction, put a motion forward at your next offer vote and then vote to revoke that power. They won't let you? File a duty to fair representation charge with the labour board. There's no doubt that corruption and other things can happen in unions, the same as any organization. But if you aren't trying to hold those people accountable when you can, you are not part of the solution, you are part of problem.

Better yet, give the workers the right to opt out of the union.

Edit: By the way, got an email from my bank saying that due to the pending labour disruption they want all members to switch to online statements. I'm already on that since the last postal stoppage but kiss another few thousand letters a month goodbye.

Go to war? No, demand to represented the way they were elected to. When the memberships' demands are not met, then you exercise your right to hold them accountable.

Looks like Canada Post has set a lockout day for Friday.

CUPW is pitching a fit right now. They wanted raises and a continuation of an their pension. Canada Post basically added up their demands and it hit a billion dollars and they said unaffordable and not going to happen.

No new deal is going to happen now without a massive kick down of the Unions demands.

Canada Post has stated that they were losing customers way in advance of this notice as companies have gone to their competitors for package delivery.

This is now a action that Canada Post has nothing to lose by having an extended lockout, and trying to gut CUPW

Damnit I just ordered something online and took the free shipping instead of opting for Fedex. Its coming from the USA, whats the chances it ships with Canada Post?

I wouldn't worry. Anything that has to go through customs likely would have taken a little while anyway. And since they were legislated back to work after just 10 days last time there is a decent chance that the delay will be limited.

So frustrating to those of us who actually have to mail something and the outgoing mail is full of junk. I walk a few doors down to my house and throw junk mail in the recycling bin.

You're fine, I chatted with them yesterday and they can adjust your account to avoid Canada Post as I was ordering a bunch of stuff for travel and asked them about the potential strike. Send them a quick email.

I've found that a lot of my outgoing mail hasn't been getting to its destination lately, in large part because it gets mixed in with items that shouldn't be in outgoing mail.

Seems lazy to put that junk mail in the outgoing slot. It's not the carrier's fault you can't be bothered to put a No Flyers Please sticker in your box. It's pretty easy to do, and they adhere to it, and you save paper, and your own energy. Print one on your computer, or use a sharpie and a sticky label. It lasts for years.

The lockout notice doesn't necessarily mean there will be a disruption, it could be a tactic to try and get the union to move on some of their demands.

My favourite part in that article is about how they've been hurting due to 75% of their ecommerce customers moving their business in anticipation of a labour dispute. Oh no you mean they moved their business to purolator? That other company you own?
