All good. Frees up a contract spot, 2.1 mill cap saving this year. Next year will cost just a hair over 1 mill but no biggie, it's like having a 14th forward who never plays but counts against the cap.

Raymond will get a PTO somewhere. I think he plays in the NHL next year.

He was injured in Stockton, by all accounts he had an exemplary attitude.

They save an extra 1.2M in cap space in probably a more important year (Wideman, Smid, Bollig, Engelland off next year probably gives them amply cap space that the Raymond buyout doesn't matter).
But they also save over a million dollars in actual cash. Instead of paying Raymond 3.15M this year, they pay him 1.050M this year and maybe 65k to whatever AHL replacement takes his spot, 1.050M next year. The Flames are still a business, if they can save $1,000,000.00 they will take it.

That's smart thinking.
Do you happen to be Carolina's cap manager?

Wideman's NMC prevents the Flames from waiving him, but he can still be bought out. So Ryan is saying we won't know if Wideman is bought out until the deadline passes - because there is no waiver offer to judge with.
However, I think it unlikely the Flames accept having two bought out players at once. If Raymond is going, Wideman is not, imnsho. We'll have to look to trade him.

Along the same lines, I am very curious about the fate of Wideman.
Would save us $4MM on the cap this year if we bought him out.

That and you don't buy out legitimate 4/5 defensemen that isn't all that overpaid. Frankly I wouldn't be shocked if Treliving isn't even trying to trade Wideman at the moment.

I still think he's an NHL player that can get something at the deadline.
I don't see it happening.

But would add $2M to the following year.
Unlikely.
Trade, retain salary more likely, if you really need the cap space this year?

Don't like that we are adding cap for nothing on the 2017-2018. Would rather have this mistake done with this season, and not drag it out into more future seasons.
In my fantasies the flames start clicking in 2016-2017 and make the playoffs, then load up and go on a deep cup run in 2017-2018. For this I want the 2017-2018 to be the year we maximize the value for our cap space, and will happily sacrifice 2016-2017 to make 2017-2018 better.

It is possible that ownership doesn't like paying a guy $3 million to play in Stockton

I have no doubt in my mind Treliving is trying to trade him. From all the rumors they have been trying to trade him for a couple of seasons. Treliving has said he wants to re-sign Nakladal, they can't do that unless they get rid of Wideman. That said can't see them buying out 2 players this year. Maybe when the dust settles they can trade Wideman, but i think he ends up on opening day roster. Have to think his NMC makes it very hard for them to trade him. I doubt he would waive to go to a team that has no chance at playoffs ( Edmonton). It would mean moving now and then moving again come tradedeadline.

It's been said that the Flames have been trying to get rid of Wideman even during his 50 point season 2 years ago,
Literally getting rid of Wideman without taking anything negative in return would be a huge win. If a team offered future considerations for him, he'd be gone. This has nothing to do with selling at an all time low.

That, and the 2M in space this year might be the difference in signing someone who otherwise wouldn't fit.
Or maybe it's just the space they need for Monahan's extension that will be signed prior to July 1

I know Mason a little. He wants a chance to play and has a young family in Calgary. Going to Stockton was tough on him personally so I'm sure this is also Flames ownership being fair to the person as well.
Flames are a classy organization and if there's an opportuntiy to do right by a player without harming the franchise, they do it.
