He was unimpressive when I watched him in the playoffs. Looked slow and played on the perimeter for the most part and didn't use his size or reach to any great effect. Maybe a change would do him good, but I wouldn't want the Flames to waste any significant resources on acquiring the guy.

I remember when some said he was the ''dark horse'' of the 2013 draft and would have no problem taking him. Some said he had the most raw skill of everyone in the draft and that with this guy, there was no ''Russian factor''.

Kind if disappointing to see his career come to this. I truly think he can still be a good NHL player with the right team and support. If the Flames can get him for cheap I'm all for it.

Ironically most of the arguments against picking him due to be a flight risk and a potential enigma turned out to be true. He is a lesser skilled Radulov that has yet to prove anything.

If I remember correctly the reason he dropped in the draft was because he stated that he wouldn't report to the AHL. If he wasn't put directly into the NHL then he would go back to Russia. I like his potential but hate his attitude. Careerwise he probably would have been better off starting in the AHL.

I would give a late 1st for him as he is a known commodity already. The 2nd + prospect is even better. I would pony up a little more if we had to seeing as he's put up 29 and 34 point seasons in his first 2 full seasons.

Is that really a poor attitude?

"Hey instead of taking a $50,000 to play in league a tier below the NHL, I'll stay home, earn at least 20x that and play against just as strong if not stronger competition until I'm ready."

I understand the aversion to NHL teams not wanting to take chances on KHL flight risks, but I'm not sure it's really a character flaw.

Quite frankly a lot of the management are complete hypocrites about this too. Steve Yzerman didn't spend several years in a bottom six role developing. Even guys like Lindy Ruff were given major opportunities right away.

The fact of the matter is that guys like Drouin and Nichushkin should be given top 6 roles right away. Nichushkin will be going into his fourth year in the NHL, which is where players start to peak. By 26 the average top end offensive player begins to decline. Expecting him to spend half of his prime in an energy role is absurd.

Dallas should never have acquired Hemsky.

Not every top 6 player is a speedster or forechecker. Some of them are just good at setting up and scoring goals. Nichushkin has a large body and he is great at getting in front of the net and into scoring positions. He's not a super fast skater, but I don't think it's fair to call him a perimeter player at all. He scores most of his goals from just in front of the net. I would love to see what he could do on a line with Gaudreau and Monahan.

It doesn't make him a bad person but if his goal is to play in the NHL then he should probably be willing to develop the way the team asks. I don't personally think Dallas is handling him well but he's kind of tied their hands a bit, things might be different if he spent the majority of his first season in the AHL learning the NA game. If his goal is to maximize his earnings early in his career then maybe he should go play in the KHL. Either way this semi yearly Nichushkin KHL watch is a distraction for the team.
