After reading things for a few weeks, I think my guy is Clayton Keller.

Doesn't check any of our boxes of adding size and grit up front, but when you have ++ attributes in skating, agility, vision, and hockey IQ, let alone being a center, this kid has all the tools of an elite player up front.

The fact he's projected to go 8-10 has me hoping Treliving can trade down and recoup a couple more picks, but worst case you take him at 6 and I think this kid is going to be fantastic.

Has Calgary taking Juolevi
Even though I prefer any of Tkachuk, Dubois, or Nylander at 6 I would be more than fine with grabbing Juolevi. I really think he will be a top 2 minute munching D man which by the time the Flames are ready to contend would give them 4 top 2 D men which is unheard of in the NHL. They could even end up with 5 depending on how Andersson develops. Can you imagine this?

Gio/Brodie
Juolevi/Hamilton
Andersson/Kylington
Hickey

How in the hell do you stop that D?

I've settled on Nylander. At this point I'd be disappointed if it's not him. It would be great to pair another skilled, fast guy like this with Sam Bennett. I really think we need another line that is a threat to score every shift.

Are we sure that is when the draft kicks off or is that when TSN does its hour long preview show?

TSN does not have the rights. Sportsnet does. Draft starts at 5pm. Pregame show starts at 430 MT

That is why you take the day off! Wake up, open CP, turn on TV to Sportsnet, and tune into 960.

I prefer Keller at 6. He will translate his game better to the NHL than Nylander will.

Why do you say that? My scouting of the 2 is limited to what I read and YouTube videos.

I'm certainly open to Keller but seeing Nylander is a superior physical specimen why would you expect a smaller, weaker player to translate his game better to the men's game? That's really the biggest question with Keller is if he's going to be able to translate his game to the NHL. Nylander will be an NHL player and really the only question is if he becomes an elite winger or top 6 winger. Keller could bust if everything doesn't go right for him.

i feel that Nylander takes too long to get his (absolutely lethal) wrist shot off. his release is not quick enough to beat pro goalies in my opinion.

he still has a killer slapper too and will probably make a living out on ovechkin island for most of his career though

With my limited knowledge I have a question. If the Flames did a deal with the Bjs, could that deal already be in place in a legal contract and kept under wraps? Or could the BJ's say they'd do a deal but back out on draft day if they changed their mind? I suppose there could be a number of scenarios in place so I realize my question is sort of hard to answer.

Nothing is guaranteed for Nylander.

Keller has a superior motor and I think that has a bigger effect on translating to this level than being taller. Keller can also give you minutes as a penalty killer, and looks to project as a very good faceoff man as well. Keller is probably the only player in this draft who's been compared to both Patrick Kane AND Jonathan Toews.

There are just too many ways Keller will get himself ice time, get himself the puck, and ultimately distribute it - whereas Nylander will not offer much if he's not on the scoring stat sheet.

His brother will play in the NHL and so will he. It's just a matter of how good he becomes. Too much skill not to succeed and as he showed in the combine he's not a talented but soft guy. I think he's the safest pick at 6 because his bust factor is lower than some of the other forwards that will be considered in the spot.

Looking at last year's draft thread...
  • Bettman took the stage at about 5:10pm
  • The Oilers made their way to the stage at about 5:15pm
  • The third overall pick was made around 5:30pm (if the Flames can trade up)
  • The sixth overall pick was made around 5:50pm (if the Flames don't trade up)

So a weaker, smaller Sam Bennett then? I'll take the bigger, stronger winger that is arguably the most naturally skilled player in the draft. That said I would rather Keller than a defenseman but I feel that the Flames will pass him over due to him being a bit redundant with Bennett in the fold and we don't even know if Keller is on the Flames radar.

Once the trade call goes through then it is official. They could have everything set up and ready to go when they are on the board, but until the trade call they could back out.

There was a story that in 2013 when the Canucks traded Schneider to NJ, the deal was completed well before the draft but Lamoriello told Vancouver if it got leaked at all before the pick he would nix the deal.
