I think if the Leafs had a good idea Tavares was going to go to free agency and he was leaning to Toronto the Leafs could hope for the best. But I don't see any signs Tavares won't re-sign with the NYI so if they can actually sign Stamkos they should probably go for it.

I can't recall where I read about this, but I distinctly remember that the value of a NHL player's endorsements are not closely connected to the market in which he plays. This is a myth. Stamkos is is already one of the most marketed and highly endorsing players in the league, and a contract with Toronto is not going to affect his supplemental income much if at all.

My gut says he stays in Tampa after testing the free agent waters and getting some offers on the table.

Stamkos will command 8+, there is no doubting that and he worries me as a UFA. Two crazy injuries in the last few years including a serious health issue in the latest one and I'm nervous to even consider the guy. That said even if he were to come here he'd have to be willing to stay in his role as Top line RW and PP specialist. This team has no room for Stamkos to be a centerman with Monahan/Bennett/Backlund/Jankowski paving the future for that position. Add to that we will be needed to hand out raises in the next few years again and I dont want any part of a 8+ mill x 6-8 year Stamkos which teams like NYR or Toronto will most likely pay.

I'm quite confident he will get much bigger offers than that, but if were to sign in Calgary for that I would be very happy.

He will either take a discount and stay in TB but given what they have to get done contract wise in the next few years I am doubtful of that or he is going to Toronto. I can't see any incentive to go to Detroit unless they offer him a huge contract and he is not caring about contending for a Cup.

I hope he signs a massive contract with one of the other Pacific Division teams.

I see Stamkos getting the "number cap hit" similar to Crosby and his $8.7M hit Stamkos will sign where he wants for $9.1M. Still makes him one of the highest players in the league but doesn't absolutely cripple a team

Stamkos will sign with Arizona.

I'm only saying this so if it actually does happen, I can go back to this post and rub it in your faces.

When I hear about coaches who don't get along with star players, I take it to mean they treat star players just like every other player. Which works in junior hockey, the minors, and for teams that have a lunch-bucket attitude. But in the NHL these days, the stars are special and they expect to be treated that way.

He shoots right...

Johnny - Monahan - Stamkos
Shinkaruk - Bennett - Nylander
shlub - shlub - shlub
shlub - shlub - shlub

Who needs depth.

Are Frolik, Backlund, Janko or Colborne "shlub"s?

I would positively love this depth, for the nickname potential alone. Stammer and Hammer on the PP!

Johnny - Mono - Stammer
Shink - Benzo - Nyls
Colby - Backs - Fro
Kenny - Janko - Ferkland
Staj

Gio - Brodes
Joki - Hammer
Nak - Eggs
Killer

So -- how is Toronto really involved with this? I understand the hometown connection but they just don't have the money. They only have $7 million in cap space and don't have a whole roster signed yet. Stamkos alone will probably command over $10 million himself. They'd have to trade contracts away just to make his contract work, let alone any other players.

So is it just the hometown connection/Toronto is the center of the hockey world media hype?

Nathan Horton on LTIR and Jared Cowen bought out would give them tons of cap space.

Jared Cowen has a 3.1M cap hit, if they bought him out he has a NEGATIVE cap hit of 650K for the first year.
