Courtesy Waves
After reading the topic about the playground zones someone brought up the fact that 'thank-you' or courtesy waves are extinct. I'm not one to care too much about them (Although it does makes your day better when someone happens to give you one) but I thought I'd share this story in hoping to cheer some people up...
On the way to Fernie two weekends ago I was driving down highway 3 (I'm from Lethbridge now for school) and there was a trucker in front of me. There was a break in on-coming traffic so I decided to pass and he saw this and moved over as much as he could onto the shoulder. Once in front of him I had to think of a way of thanking him but being as it was night I couldn't give the normal wave so I gave him the courtesy four-way blinkers for a couple seconds. Miraculously in return he gave me the return courtesy high-beam flash!
It might have been my favourite driving moment I've ever had.
Hopefully people have faith in mankind again... and if that trucker ever reads this I hope he knows that it was an awesome show of gratitude cause he didn't even have to acknowledge me.

the rear windows in my car are a limo tint, so even if i wave no one will see it. though if someone is kind enough to let me in or pass (VERY rare in this city) i always use the blinker thanks

with tinted windows it hard to give the old wave after passing someone so I usually tap my brakes quickly twice once i'm a fair bit past. I usually find truckers give me a flash back.
I get so ****ed off when I let people in or whatever and they don't wave

Well thats a good situation, but people in Calgary for the most part never take the time to wave, its not that hard but it ****es me off when I let someone in and they dont have the respect to wave and say thanks. Manners I think are starting to slip in this day and age... so sad...

I get courtesy waves about 75% of the time I let people in. I usually don't mind letting people in, but sometimes I'm in the mood of "You'd better wave, you F***er." When I get a wave, I give a military salute back-more for my sake, because I'm not sure they ever are looking for an acknowledgement.

I hate it when somebody doesn't wave. Sometimes its a lack of courtesy, sometimes it's the person has been paying so little attention that they didn't even realize that I slowed down to let them in. Yes, I know at a merge we have equal right of way, but at least a quick hand movement to say thanks.
Worst is southbound Blackfoot. Those long yields that are almost long enough to be a merge. I purposely make a gap for somebody, and they just saunter in. To me the no wave says "That's right buddy, I am way more important than you."

Oh, the joys of becoming a big city. If I remember back to when I was younger, my parents never complained about someone not waving, and 99% of the time gave the wave of thanks.
Courtesy is all lost in the big city.

I wave, and wave back if someone waves (and get mad if someone doesn't wave). I also turn off/on the fog lamps to signal people to go in front IF they are signaling and I don't think they are being a goof trying to cut in front (when they knew full well they should have been in my lane a block ago).

I'm finding back driving in Calgary again that most of the time people let you in and give you a wave if you let them in. If they don't let you in I just cut them off or act like I'm about to drive into them and scare the crap out of them. Have zero sympathy for them once they won't work with ya.

The courtesy wave does seem to be getting hard to come by these days. But I remeber after a Flames game in the parking lot when this one car was sorta stuck between moving lanes of traffic so I let him in and got an arm out of the window wave. In the rain no less! Best courtesy wave ever.

I always wave.
I find it ****es people off if they weren't considering letting you in in the first place.

Same here, however I will roll my window down to give out the waive.

If someone has to make an effort to let me in, or if I have to slide in, I always courtesy wave, and I expect the same. Its becoming rare.
When I have to really work and almost play chicken to get into a lane (cause there's an accident in my lane or something), I usually give a very derisive wave, or flip them off.

I always wave, but there's been a lot of times that I don't think people've seen it (e.g. semis, high trucks, etc.)
Never thought of the courtesy blinkers. Gotta give that a try next time.

I never wave during rush hour. Conversely, I never expect waves during rush hour.
You just gotta let people in when it's bumper to bumper.

I'm usually sure to wave when someone lets me in....although I don't usually expect a wave when I let someone in. The only time I get ****ed off is when some jerkoff cuts to the front of a lane that's closing off so to get to the front of the line - if those guys don't wave...well, I don't do ****, but I'm mildly annoyed.
