Thank goodness. Not a fan of his at all. Maybe it was just a fluke but it seemed like almost every time I watched him play last season he was underwhelming. Glad Toronto took the risk and not the Flames.

Yep. No way it was as simple as matching the Leafs offer. Same kind of deal when the Oilers were trying to get Schneider from the Canucks.
Just as well, I think Andersen is above average but not the kind of goalie I would want to see locked down to a long term deal that will likely have a cap hit starting with a 6. Fleury is of similar quality, just older and more cost controlled (no way Andersen signs for 3 years or less IMO). He will serve as a stop gap much better than Andersen would have.

They had Ken Holland on hockey central at noon on TV today. I think it's very safe to say Mrazek is going nowhere. The sense I got from Holland is that they roll with Howard/Mrazek or find an upgrade on Howard somehow. They want to give Mrazek more starts but said it's totally unfair to him as a 23 year old to push him into 70 starts a year when he and Howard were wildly inconsistent last year. His words, not mine. He's their future in net.

As a Leafs fan, pleased.
As a Flames fan, pleased.

Either way this is good news. Takes the other most obvious landing spot off the table. Advantage JT.

The 2nd would be Ottawa's or San Jose's next year (the Leaf's pick is committed to Pittsburgh as a conditional pick in the Kessel deal), so I'm not sure 30 plus one of those picks is much better than 35+54 and certainly wouldn't be as good as 35+54+56

And I think that Andersen is worth much more on the market. Has already shown starter capability. I thought that was a little much for Talbot, and a little less for Andersen

Wait, you mean a team paid considerably more for a younger (albeit just a year younger) starting goalie than an older backup? Say it ain't so!

It's likely nothing develops from a Calgary perspective until the draft. If they are ge uinely trying to move into the top 3, those second rounders are likely currency. So until they know how that turns out, they won't know specifically what they have to offer for a goalie.
Perfect scenario is two seconds helps them move into the top 3 and the remaining second is a part of a deal for a goalie.

I think BT can take his time with the goalie search. One of the teams that has multiple goalies will blink so they can maximize value for one of their spare goalies. Reimer is probably cursing how his UFA season is unfolding going into July 1st.

Count me as one of those fans who think that the future of the Flames netminding is in the hands of Gillies or McDonald... so I am happy with this deal.
Direct assets at trying to fill the hole on the top line, and stock the cupboards. In a couple years time, if neither Gillies or McDonald haven't given you confidence that either one can be a #1... trade either players or picks for a young proven netminder who can be our #1 goalie and grow with the team. By then, the core and the support cast is pretty much set for the next while... giving up picks for a goalie wouldn't hurt the team as much.

5 year extension for Andersen
Pierre LeBrun @Real_ESPNLeBrun
Told Leafs have agreed to a five year extension with Andersen as well. He would have been RFA July 1

It's going to be tough with Datsyuk's contract, Howard at $5M and having to re-sign Mrazek and DeKeyser.

I'm not high on Reimer, but if we use the assets for trading for a goalie and turn it into Poolparty, I am in.

I agree. If the Flames make a trade for a goalie, it probably happens Saturday morning.

Gotta admit, I'm crushed.
I've been watching Andersen for a couple of years now, and I REALLY wanted him in Calgary.
Now that he's off the list, Allen isn't being moved (as Elliott won't need to be protected), Vasilevskey isn't being moved (as Bishop won't need to be protected), Mrazek was never going to be moved... man, the choices are getting slim...
I guess the good news is that Fleury has nowhere to go but here. The bad is if Pittsburgh decides to play hardball in terms of value, we get stuck with the one guy I didn't want... Reimer.
As I posted in another thread, I'll take Reimer on a 1 year, 2.5M show-me contract if worse comes to worse, but YEESH...
I guess I now just have to hope that something works its way out with Fleury...

He's been more of a 1A/B goaltender for the Ducks. Similar to Reimer in that he's not proven as a full time starter. Talbot put up incredible eye opening numbers in a 20 game stretch for the Rangers. Not a lot to choose between them IMO.
