Default Brian McGratton in town interviewing

I'm in town from California and noticed Brian at a Banff brunch. I spoke only briefly with him to not interrupt his father's day meal, but he did mention he's speaking with some GMs about a position in the front office, possibly in Stockton. Being from the bay area I had some small advice about places to live there.

Better than your average Orange Julius rumor!

There's room in my organization for McGrattan - would love to see them add him to the group

You have an organization?

There's so much I don't know about my fellow CP members.

The reason it ever came up was because told him I always hoped he'd remain in the organization. Maybe he will?

Associate coach search over :P

To see him come back to the Flames organization would be fantastic, and by all accounts his family loves California. Stockton would be a good fit

I have no doubt McGrattan would be an asset to any organization, would absolutely love for him to return to the Flames organization for a 3rd time. One of my all-time favorite Flames.

honest question - what does he add to the organization? No indication from his playing career, positive of negative, how he would do in an office job. Jim Cummins went from tough guy to amateur scout; Troy Crowder went from tough guy to skating coach/player development coach
What skill/talent does McGratton bring?

McGrattan has counselled/helped several players with their personal problems and teams are employing more and more people to help their players off the ice, I wouldn't be shocked if he was hired by an NHL team as a mentor of sorts; it will probably be described as player development though.

Monahan has credited him working off season and teaching him about being a pro.

I could see him in a role similar to what Brantt Myhers is doing with the Kings.

Not sure if it is a full time position or not but with so much potential for trouble a role like that would be a good investment for any pro sports organization.

Apart from this McGrattan has watched hundreds of NHL games from the bench. Also, he is rumoured to be the operator of @boringmonahan. Just seems like a good guy to have in the organization.

Squeezed out of the NHL by the increasing speed of the game, McGrattan is without a contract despite posting nine goals and 17 points in 58 games last season with Anaheim’s AHL affiliate in San Diego. He also had 144 penalty minutes.

One of the more intriguing possibilities comes via the KHL, where the expansion team in Beijing has expressed some interest after a bizarre preseason game went awry when visiting player Damir Ryspayev attacked three players on the ice before engaging with a fourth on the bench. The psychotic outing earned him a lifetime ban but clearly embarrassed the Beijing squad.

“You’ve just got to think of what that kind of thing would do for morale for that team,” said McGrattan, who is waiting to hear how a meeting with his agent’s partner went in Beijing.

“I don’t think that would happen with any team I was on. Having me come in would make everybody feel a little taller and a little stronger. I never would have thought I’d consider Europe but now I’m open to anything because I want to play another two or three years. It would be a cool experience but I want to exhaust my options here first.”

McGrattan said he has spoken with the Flames about possible employment, convinced he can be invaluable to an NHL club by toiling with an AHL affiliate.

“Thirty teams should be knocking on my door because of what I can do for their young guys,” said the recovering alcoholic who wants to punctuate his playing days by helping young athletes avoid some of the pitfalls he stumbled through.

“In pro sports there are drug and alcohol problems on every team — that’s life. If I can keep one of their guys on the straight and narrow, how beneficial could that be for an organization? It’s a no brainer. Plus, no one comes near me. I still play hard.”

Last year he played that nurturing role for Anaheim’s first-round prospect Nick Ritchie, rooming with him, protecting him and preparing him for his eventual jump to the NHL.

“Somewhere along the road that position will open up and probably even be mandatory to help teams out, and the more I can do it while playing is the first step of me working post hockey,” said McGrattan.
