One thing on the security front is how much money do you really need to survive even if you have a family with kids. Even with two kids you could live in a 2 bed room apartment in the burbs near a train and school and have no car and pursue your dream in a secure manner.
Most don't pursue their dreams not because they have too much responsibility but because they like the comfort level they get from their drone job. If you actually make a list of the costs of your NEEDS without wants and really challenge those assumptions.
Used clothes, cheap food (no beef), government subsidies, and find out how little you can live on. It is shockingly low.

Used to love my job, but have just been tolerating it the last 3-4 years for the paycheck.
Have got the wheels in motion on something new though that I've always wanted to do. If it's profitable, I'll transition from what I'm doing now, into this new venture full-time.
My aim is to be self-employed by April, 2020.

Now I'm surrounded by tech geeks like myself, I get challenged at work every day dealing with stuff I'm so interested in that it doesn't feel much like work to me. I'm also a guy who became hooked on learning at a young age thanks to my dad, and to this day I love getting those aha moments when I'm working with the mainframe and be lucky enough to be surrounded by lots of people that I get along with great.
I don't know why its this way, maybe less ego in IT people, no one is in suits holding meetings about useless nonsense.. Either way I'm very happy.

That's funny.
I was on the analysis side for a bit - statistical software and the like. I don't have very strong skills, but I learn quickly, and I would tend to provide lots of conceptual recommendations. I hated it.
Thankfully, back on the business side where I can talk, and talk, and talk to my heart's content.
I am convinced that it is all about a natural suite of abilities that we are born with, slightly develop through childhood, and then, have for the rest of our lives.

Constantly do the company favors, constantly give them my spare time and show up for shifts on call when it's not an on call job and the moment I need a second to organize my life or the moment I have any crisis they won't give me 5 minutes to make a phone call.

You've been complaining about this for months now. Why haven't you done anything about it, yet?

really surprised at the poll results. seems to be a high level of work satisfaction. is CP a decent sample of Calgary? IRL, one major theme of conversations would be how stressful work is. or do i only associate with high-strung complainers??
work is ok for me. last 10 years have entailed roughly 5 hours a day, with 2 days a month at an insane-o 14 hours. lets me spend time with the daughter (critical now with the ongoing divorce/custody issue). i honestly don't have many complaints, besides my ever-shrinking take-home due to rising overhead and property taxes.

Yes. Mid-six-figure incomes, high job satisfaction, and all excellent drivers.

Because I have become physically disabled and cannot be perorm a labor job very well. I have severe nerve damage to my neck and the right side of my body is numb. Basically trapped financially is why I stayed.
The only positions currently available are labor jobs. Probably going to force myself to do it though, might go buy a bunch of painkillers or something to struggle through. Definitely on a downward spiral from this job.

There has to be other jobs without all the drama AcGold. You are stressing yourself out by staying there. Do yourself a favour and git.

If you were injured at work, you should have received worker's compensation, and a temporary lay-off. Plenty of time to look for other work. You have a university degree.

I called the labor board and tried to get workers comp but it's a strain over time injury so there's no option. I have to figure something in the meantime as I'm kind of losing my mind, 24/7 pain makes it hard to do anything.

Try anyway.
Get your employer to fill out WCB paperwork, do yours, and get a physio/doctor assessment. Worth a shot.

No, I do not like my job.
I get paid very well for what I do, and although I'm probably financially independent at this point, I have a fear of not having enough money and so I keep working. But I absolutely hate my job and not a week goes by when I don't seriously consider quitting and walking out the door that afternoon.

I work for an insurance company in the Quality Assurance department. But I don't have an IT role, like many QA jobs seem to be.... I work more in policy/procedure development and ensuring quality of communication and meeting appropriate legislation, etc.
