Hoping someone can help me out with some ideas from previous experience.
With my wife heading back to work full time for the first time in a while I need to find summer camps for my kids to keep them busy throughout the summer. I'll be able to take a week off work but that leaves 7-8 weeks to manage. This gets expensive super quick.
I'm open to sports camps, science/art camps, whatever - as long as it is safe, well run and not crazy expensive. Or maybe people have other solutions they have used for this situation? Thoughts?

- City of Calgary - but, careful, not all programs offer before and after care
- YMCA. I like these camps for how the times align with a work day
- Calgary zoo
- Google "Calgary reptile camp". Can't remember the name, but the one that will come up was popular with my two youngest
- Winsport. Haven't done these ones, but they look fun, albeit expensive
- Mount Royal has good camps and times
Oh, and you're late. Especially for July, you'll be taking what you can get.
Also, all of these will run ~$200-$300 per kid per week.

In Safeway and other places they have those parents magazines (they're big newspaper like things, where they usually have the rental and other papers), they basically have every almost every single camp in Calgary, even the off the beaten path ones.
There's lots of camps at community centers and stuff as well, that paper has hundreds of them. There's lost of sports camps too, though be careful some of them are intense, I guess they cater to future Olympians or something.

What neighbourhood are you in? I'm in McKenzie Towne and I know the community association has a bunch of camps running all summer with the before and after care. It's nice because you don't have to travel far.

Sailing is a good summer camp to do. If you are in the south, there is also some of the art classes at Wildflower Arts and another enjoyable one was swimming at the Acadia pool. We did a few at the Beltline pool too. Just depends on your proximity to the events. Especially if you have to pick them up a bit early.
Park and Play is free if your kids like playing outside though the hours are limited. Royal City Soccer also has low priced camps all around the city, they're more focussed on fun than skill/technique and are also outside all the time unless weather is bad.
since you are in douglas dale you may want to check witht eh folks at juvenecense which is the day care facility right beside the car wash as they have camps and they open them up to kids who don't regularly attend the day care.
as an aside, you have left this too long as you usually need to sort it out by april; however, the slack economy may wind up being your friend.
you can look at all the places mentioned above, and try and pick camps at locations that make it easy to drop off and pick up your kids

Our kids have gone to that one for a couple years. They do half the day in the pool and the other half doing general crafts and games. It's well run, and handy for dropping off/ picking off of you drive into the core from the southwest.

Are there any daily drop-in day camps in Calgary that can be pre-registered, not same day.
I'm aware I could arrange a sitter, or book full week camps which for some weeks I shall be and have; however, as a recent addition to the economic lay-offs, and just beginning the outplacement program after many years with my former employer.
Given from what I'm seeing so far it is possible I may not be reemployed until the fall seeing average re-hire times of other former colleagues with different companies- I would like to spend days this summer with my 8 yr old son, but I'm looking at this as a positive to spend more time; but I also need to commit to the programs on site meetings, coaching, potential interviews as well, but that is often 2 days per week not 5.

Have you tried the Calgary Rec? I had a friend that worked at the Trico Centre and I think they have drop in day-camps that you could register for.
Also, have you considered Spelling Camp? /obligatory.
