Strategic bought the site that is almost at grade on 10th avenue and Macleod trail and has plans to build a tower there, working name of the development is "One".

Edit: Oh and on 10th avenue and 8th street area of Beltline the two towers that have gone up west of Mark on 10th. They were also from a capped project. Yet another one pops into my head! The Metropolitan condo on 11th avenue by the Midtown Co-op. Another grade capped one that eventually went ahead with a different design.
Also, Centre 10 office was originally to be a multi-res project known as Gateway and 2020 4 Street in Mission was capped for a while I believe.

So it's fairly common for these projects to be re-started.

Nope, you're talking about Centre 10. The project I'm referring to was on 11th avenue, I can't even remember the original design, I think maybe two towers. After it got capped it was resurrected as a giant midrise block. I think the original was called Kai Towers (the furniture place with the same name was what was there before construction started).

It definitely looks like the residential projects get going again in some form, harder for the big office ones. In the case of FCC2 I have heard that the bones of the building dictate a certain floorplate size/restrictions they have to work with for any new design. So it may not be able to compete as effectively against brand new builds.

Lolwut. You mean in the same way that every other skyscraper is a long rectangular shaped thing?

Spoiler!

Seriously, this might be the laziest critique of The Bow I've ever seen.

Just another one in full context.

New tallest rising in Calgary

I'm a fan of Brookfield...the quality of the glass, the subtlety of the curves, and a (hopefully) nicely executed crown makes this one a really elegant tower. It's never going to be a postcard building, but I's turned out better than I was expecting.

I also think saying that the Bow is just another Toronto City hall is a very narrow (and honestly, kind of ignorant) view of architecture. The Bow might be a continuation of a lot of other Foster designers, but not every building that shares a basic shape is the same. The buildings are from completely different eras, styles, and philosophies.

Just a correction, the Metropolitan's design was changed prior to it being capped. The exterior design for the restart was kept exactly as it was already approved - other than a few minor tweaks.

It was called Kai Towers, then Oslo, then Karma, and then the Metropolitan.

I have learned at CP that the Bow is dear to the hearts of some but that doesn't change the fact that I don't love it. It's a fine looking building from certain angles but it would have looked so much better if they made it over 800 ft tall due to it's massive width from the NE view that makes it look like a big rectangular building.

I don't think you're going too get much argument from most that it would've looked better if it was taller/thinner. That was the original plan of the architect too. It definitely feels a bit too girthy from some angles.

I think the point of contention is that it's "just a taller version of Toronto City Hall".

Yeah, the Bow is impressive. But from anywhere outside of downtown, it looks like another rectangular building. I'm not complaining, I'm just saying.

Would have been cool to make it taller though.

Okay I agree that I was overly dismissive comparing it Toronto city hall. I just feel it's one of those projects that suffered from cost cutting and isn't what it could have been.

Yeah, it definitely did suffer from some cost-cutting in terms of design execution. While there's a bit of a "what if" with the building, I think Calgary got a pretty great building out of it regardless.

The biggest shame/tragedy of the Bow however is what has happened across the street.

If the second Brookfield tower and the full atrium ever gets built I think it will come together as a really nice project.

I'm not even quite sure what you mean by that. It's a huge building and looks the same from outside downtown as inside downtown from any given angle......only smaller.

I know you're not from Calgary or I'd say check it out tomorrow when you're outside downtown. Like you were you just guessing it looks like a rectangle from outside downtown? It has it's bad sides (the NE, imo) but every angle looks like a unique building. There isn't one that makes me go 'Wow, you think it was a rectangle from here if you didn't know better.
