They have the most ####ed up cap situation in the league IMO, they have plenty to gain in this scenario. That's $5.5m they can use on an actual, contributing hockey player and they would still get a great prospect at 6. I would seriously consider that if I was Kekalainen, especially if my scouts could convince me that the gap between Puljujarvi and Nylander/Tkachuk/Dubois/One of the Dmen is a gap and not a chasm.

More like 2.5 if they get Stajan in the deal.

Clarkson runs for 4 more years though. If it's that big of a deal, insert Raymond instead. Honestly, I would do just Clarkson+3 for 6 if it was a deal breaker. This team is still rebuilding and Puljujarvi would be worth being locked out of UFA for a couple of years.

Could you imagine if this trade happened and Clarkson stepped up and played up to his contract!

Lol...I know I know, but it's a long off season

Have we seen any examples where a team has paid that stiff a price to get out of a contract?

I'd be pretty pissed if we took on Clarkson, just to get from #6 to #3. That deal would cause a lot of problems for this team immediately, and for the next 4 years.

I'd actually like this proposal to be made into a no/yes poll to see how many people wouldn't and would be willing to do this.

They get rid of probably the worst contract in the entire league. The issue with Clarksons seems to be that he isn't injured enough to simply put him on LTIR and bury his contract like the Leafs can do with Horton and Robidas, nor is he healthy or good enough to be worth the massive amounts of money they are paying him. Getting shot of that contract for a team like the Jackets would be a god send.

Yes, taking Stajan back lessens the impact for them, but his buy out would be significantly less, or they could just use him as a serviceable NHLer in a 4th line role for the next 2 years. 2 years at $3.1m or 4 years at $5m+. I bet the owners would jump at the chance to shed themselves of that deal.

Unless we could find a way to get Clarkson on LTIR and Treliving could convince the Flames owners to stump up the hefty financial commitment over the next 4 years, I don't see us going anywhere near that toxic contract.

Going down to 6th overall from 3rd previously is definitely a loss for the BJs, but wouldn't this also allow them the potential to now weasel out of 2 anchor contracts instead of 1? You know, with Clarkson's contract being a bitch to buyout because it costs A LOT more, and Stajan being much more palatable as a buyout than Clarkson, I could easily see the Jackets buying that out no problem.

So because of that, the Jackets could come out of that pretty nicely. Meanwhile the Flames will almost certainly be stuck with the Clarkson contract for 4 more years.

Why would the Flames want to give them that luxury??

The Flames would be handcuffed with Clarkson, would moving up 3 spots be worth that anchor of Clarksons 4 years with Gaudreau, Monahan and Bennett looking to get raises.

Plus I don't see Keklainen passing up on a franchise Finn like Puljujarvi.

Because we are not getting this at #6

"Top true Euro forward in the 2015 class is a Finn born in Sweden who has been playing in the Finnish elite league since he was 16. Elite size, speed and shot. Uses his size to out-muscle opponents and has a deadly shot he is unafraid to use repeatedly. Some would argue that being scoring leader at the World Junior Tourney was a coming out party but he has established himself as a strong player in most phases of the game in the Finnish Pro league. Paired with Patrik Laine as bookend wings for his regular centre in Kärpät , Sebastian Aho, both solidified their status as early selections. I have him with on edge of Laine based on how strong a finisher Puljujärvi is down low. Jesse is a very strong skater and although doesn't appear as a dominant scoring threat shift after shift, he gets his chances and moreover he makes his line one that it is difficult to get scoring chances on. He stays involved shift after shift: He acts as a huge screen. He has terrific hands and a attack zone work tools, including an explosive burst, and smart two-way game. Still not as fluid or as offensively polished to challenge as the draft's top forward, but this RW has abilities that project him to turn into an excellent pro.

I still can't believe the Leafs got rid of that contract. Anyway, enough of this nonsense and back to draft talk. LOL

Okay, but do you think it's worth it taking on Clarkson's contract knowing the Flames will probably be stuck with that #### for 4 more years because of the high cost and little savings in buying that out just to get Puljujärvi and have the possibility of Columbus potentially get off with ridiculous unevenly less financial repercussions if they buy Stajan out?

I don't. Do you?

Plus I don't see Keklainen passing up on a franchise Finn like Puljujarvi.

Yeah I don't see their motivation with Stajan included in there.

But I think by far a much bigger issue is how many NMCs they have leading up to a potential expansion draft. Dubinsky, Foligno, Hartnell, Tyutin, and Bobrovsky all needing to be protected. They may be quite motivated by move out a guy or two off that list.
