If we go with Reimer, I don't think I'd be comfortable with Ortio as a backup. Reimer's more of a platoon-type goal and if Joni makes 30+ starts next season, I don't see us in the playoffs.

Leafs are looking for a new starter. If they find one, they need to get rid of Bernier's contract. We can offer them Raymond to save them around 2 mil and get a player who did very well for them 2 years ago.
|
Are you saying the Leafs should trade Bernier straight-up for Raymond? How would that make any sense for the Leafs?
First I'm not so sure Leafs are looking for a new starter. They are still in rebuild mode and I think are happy going with Bernier and one of the AHL guys next year.
And Bernier finished the season pretty strong this year. Why would Toronto trade for a player who provides zero to the team and takes a spot away from one of the young guys?

According to Capfriendly, Leafs have less than 11 mill of cap space next year. Like I wrote in my post, IF they get a new starter, I don't think they can afford a 4.125 million backup. A trade for Raymond saves them around 2 million and gives them a usefull 3rd liner. Maybe we can add a mid round pick / retain a bit of salary to make it work.
I guess it all depends on what their plans are this summer. If they are going after Stamkos, I don't think the "we're still in a rebuild mode" is gonna be their selling point

Ortio under a million would be a good backup

ROFL if the Flames trade Gillies in a package to get MAF I will seriously lose my freaking mind. Not too worried because I'm quite confident BT would never do anything like that, especially in a buyers market for goaltenders.
If they trade anything with more value than a 2nd round pick to get a goalie who's north of 30 I'm going to be so disappointed.
A couple 2nd round picks or a 2nd round pick and middling prospect for a guy like MAF and that's it IMO.
If Rutherford wants more he can pound sand and BT should just go sign Reimer without giving up any assets.
Now, if we're talking about snagging a goalie who's 25 or under with a pedigree and/or pro track record, then I'd personally be willing to start parting with better assets.

I have not been to the site but that must be a typo. No chance leafs have only 11 million in cap space. unless of course that site has already pencilled in Stamkos contract. Lol

Actually, it's correct. The Leafs have over $63 million in cap hit already committed for next season. That includes $5.3m for Nathan Horton, for which they'll get an LTIR exemption. It also includes $1.2m retained from the Kessel trade, $1,333,333 from the Gleason buyout, and $2,150,000 to bury Jared Cowen in the minors.
In practice, the Leafs have about $16m in cap hit that they can spend, with 19 active NHL players under contract. (Based on a $74m cap estimate.)

So they dont need to dump Bernier then. It would take an asset to get him and maybe they want to see if he rebounds.
I guess if they replace Bernier with something better you'd have to wonder why we wouldn't have been in on that.

Yeah, the whole Bishop thing confuses me. He's injury prone, only has one year left before UFA (where he'll be looking for bank) and I think he'll be the hardest hit goalie by pad restrictions.
An oft injured, $8M goalie struggling with smaller pads is the future I see with him...

To be fair, Toronto's best season of late was with Reimer taking #1 duty. Albeit only 33 games, I never understood what drew them to Bernier and platooning them. But all logic, Reimer had earned the net.
So really, he's been a platoon goalie by poor decisions. Not for his lack of (demonstrated) ability

All goalies will be a gamble with the planned pad reductions...

Agreed. And with the reductions a focus on athleticism is going to be paramount. Big Blocking goalies will be the greater risk. If the Flames can nab a big athletic goalie in the same vein as Rinne, the Flames might come out ahead.

I think this theory is based more on a hope than it is on logic. Goalies are still going to focus on positioning and going into the butterfly to block shots. There has already been one equipment reduction and save % keeps going up.

Yes for sure but I feel a younger goaltender may be able to adapt better (seeing he's still learning and developing his game) than a veteran that has made a career of making himself big. Still though making the equipment smaller (it's not like they are shrinking things to 80's era equipment size) isn't going to render good goaltenders terrible and we are simply going to see at best one shot per game go in the net that would today hit the edge of larger equipment.

You guys are making it sound like the pads will be razor thin and form fitted / shrink wrapped to the goaltender.

Link is the video:
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/h...e-equipment-2/
It's the overall coverage of the equipment. Coery Hirsch pretty much boils down to what the goalies will likely look like next season compared to the year before. You can see why I think getting more athletic goalies are going to be key.

I think it's not just the equipment that needs to change, it's the mentality behind it all.
There was a time when a goalie was trained to stop a puck, and the equipment he wore was just there to protect him while he did his job. Nowadays, though, it seems like the mentality is to learn how to use your equipment to stop the puck.
Remember when "reflex" used to be a style of goaltending? There was stand up and reflex. Then Roy came along and then there was reflex, butterfly and scramble (which was butterfly and reflex combined). Now there's just butterfly and something called hybrid, which is only differentiated by how long the goalie waits before going into the butterfly.
The point is that leg pads were only ever intended to protect the legs, they were never meant to be a second and third blocker that you wear on your legs.
Look at Stephane Fiset

and now look at Andrei Vasilevskiy

Thank you for the link. I have seen the video (but will watch it again), but until we see actual pads or at least prototypes I'm not sure there is a cause for concern quite yet. The last time this debate hit a fever pitch and changes were made they were marginal at most. That being said, I personally can't see pads going back to a size/style from the 80s/90s.
