Just wait until Samsun pay comes out. It will blow apple pay out of the water. It uses a new magnetic technology that will make it work on all terminals, including the older ones that don't have tap. You won't need a wallet with samsung pay.

That doesn't make any sense. If the pay machine doesn't have any wireless tech, how does the phone communicate with it?
I used it today in a Subway. Just take phone out of pocket, hover over terminal, phone wakes itself asks for Touch ID, beep, done.
Pretty neat, but but until all terminals are tap I still have to carry around my cards. Promising tech however.
It's pretty cool. I think the only hitch is not being able to use it at gas pumps... Unless regulations change around using phones at the pumps, which doesn't seem likely in the distant future.

Ugh, I wish they'd just settle on a standard device pay system and apply it across all devices.

They kind of are, at least the devices are using tap so it's not like the stores have to have a special terminal for a specific device.
This magnetic thing is just having the phone pretend to be a card with a magnetic stripe, so it too is just working with a standard way of accepting payment.
Though I don't really see how that will blow Apple Pay out of the water, you can't hardly use your magnetic stripe in Canada or Europe anymore, and it's a dead-end in the US now that they're moving to chip finally.

What rules about using phones at gas pumps? Last I heard that was debunked- the issue with people using phones is when they go back into their car and create static sliding across the seat.

The latest samsung phones (S6 and later) have a magnetic communication technology (in addition to the NFC tech) that allows Samsung Pay to be used in terminals that do not have NFC or tap as well those that do. When this comes out in Canada, I'll finally be able to leave my wallet at home.

Is it? I don't know, I still abide by the signs on the pump that have the picture of a phone encircled with a slash going through it. That said, the only thing I could possibly think of as being dangerous is maybe the little motor inside it for vibrating the phone could potentially be a spark issue.

It is indeed a myth:
There's really nothing stopping you from using your cell phone at the pump, so it's not like the tap to pay won't function.

I can't remember the last time I've had to swipe a card. It's pretty much gone at least a chip everywhere. i can't see how this magnetic strip thing would be particularly useful in Canada.

For whatever reason I tend to find my chip won't work from time to time. It seems to be retailer specific and only at some terminals which is really weird. But for that reason having a mag stripe for backup is nice to have. But then again there are also some retailers where my mag stripe won't work either.
Lowes used to be really bad for that to the point where I could not shop there. They did not use chip technology (do they now?) and their machines would never read the mag strip on my card.
Cards seem to have a pretty short life span in my wallet for some reason, both the strips and chips both seem to quit working after a relatively short period of time.

Most devices are setup to not even accept a mag stripe if the chip doesn't work (it's a bit weird as it'll ask for the mag stripe, then fail after accepting the stripe).
I'll guess you're a BMO customer as they seem to have the worst debit cards in the world, I have to replace mine constantly.
The cards tend to get bent easily and if the chip reader slot is a bit bigger then the chip doesn't make good contact. Keep a business card with you and try putting the business card in under the card; that seems to work for me.
REALLY looking forward to debit on Apple Pay so I can stop replacing my debit card every 3 months.

I have a store with a credit card machine. If somebody's chip/mag thing doesn't work, I can just key in their card number by hand. It is strange that you can circumvent all that security (you don't even need a pin when you do it this way - just the three numbers on the back), but it works well for me as we do a fair amount of business over the phone/Internet.
I set up my RBC debit card in Apple Pay, and I used it all weekend. It's crazy how easy it is. I even got a few looks like they thought I had just hacked their machine because they didn't see me pull out a card, lol.

Does the bank ask you to make sure they show photo ID in this instance? Plus validate signature?
If not it seems like an easy way to steal someones credit card as long as you have the numbers. At least with online you would have a physical address to tie it to.
