Yeah in these days, an internet record is much more worrisome than a criminal record because you can never really expunge it. Even changing your name won't work with all the photo tagging. Best try to stay on the straight and narrow. Agree that looter dude is toast.

If anyone should be criticized for not putting a publication ban in place it's the judge who thinks the case is weak, and should understand the repercussions of someone's name getting out during a pretty emotionally charged time.

The RCMP and Crown have nothing to do with it, so leave them out of it.
Two different things.

Considering the judge felt that the case was weak and knowing tebsituation surrounding the events, a publication ban might have been prudent.

If the Crown and RCMP rushed to charge someone to appear proactive and they were wrong, they won't face consequences, which IMO is not fair to anyone.

Why would the crown or judge cover it up though? The public has a right to know, unless there is a ban, there is no legal restriction.

If the media finds out about it, that would lead to questions about a cover up and why the accused is receiving preferential treatment.

A publication ban isn't a cover up, it simply prevents the media from disseminating certain details that could have a negative effect of the administration of justice.

In this case, where we have a very sensitive subject where emotions will run rampant and the evidence being proffered by the Crown is weak, keeping his identity from the general public might have served to ensure a fair trail and if he was acquired, prevent his life from being ruined.

It's all moot at this point though. As far as the public is currently concerned, he's guilty regardless of the strenght of the evidence the Crown has and it won't matter what verdict is handed down by the judge. Forget about trying to find an impartial jury as well.

It's up to the defence to request a publication ban, if it's legal aid I doubt it would occur to them on what is a likely simple theft under charge.

I do pet therapy with one of my dogs. This weekend, a group will be visiting the evacuation centre at SAIT. Unfortunately, my dog and I won't be able to attend, as we already have a previous volunteer commitment. Therapy dogs were also meeting some of the evacuation flights that arrived at the airport last week.

This has been a week of polarized emotions. Fear and courage; despair and hope; loss and triumph. Wins have felt few and far between and in that first 48 hours there were some deep moments of pain.

“Abandon Abasand”

“Beaconhill is lost”

“We are going to lose the airport”

“The water treatment plant is on fire”

We were losing. Damnit, we were losing this thing.

People like my Captain. When he heard that his house was lost, he could have given up or walked away. Instead he held his post at Incident Command, did his job, and kept the rest of us safe. Days later when he would be able to survey the smoldering wreckage of all that he owned, he found the only unburnt item that survived. His mother’s ashes and her wedding ring, the only true thing of importance to him.

For Blaster86...A Japanese toy company is selling a firetruck Transformer collectible for $125 with the proceeds going to the Red Cross for Fort Mac. Now I've seen everything.

It will be truly odd for the grade 12 kids in particular, they will be graduating practically alone in a sea of strangers from a school they barely attended.

My Daughter had a friend from her class move up to Fort Mac when she was in Kindergarten. This week, that friend is back in my daughters grade 3 class. At least for some people, there is an oppurtunity to have some familiar faces around even while you are displaced.

What are the profits?

We don't know the expenses, costs & taxes.

NRF is a massive firm & this is poor optics & marketing.

It looks like an event souvenir. And McCann is an ad agency. This definitely looks like a PR stunt.

ehn, not much of a PR stunt given they (rightly) have left their branding off the shirt. Don't have an issue with the company names being on the webpage as it shows its actually being run by people who will deliver and aren't going to run away with the cash. I'm assuming they have the resources and contacts to run a shirt campaign for charity and wanted to help however they could. I like it myself - whatever it takes to get people to donate is great. I'm sure they've also made a monetary donation (i know for sure most big law firms and accounting firms have made fairly substantial corporate donations and some are doing employee matching as well).
